Many must have just taken for granted that human activity was documented in the form of a record placed on board the Voyager spacecraft. But what was in it?

As a matter of interest, the craft has just completed 30 years in space and heading farther and farther out. At present, Voyager 1 is at a distance of 103.6 AU (approximately 15.5 terameters, 9.7 billion miles or 0.0016 light years) from the Sun, which makes it the most distant human-made object from Earth. At this distance, it is more distant from the Sun than any known natural solar system object, including Sedna.

So what is this record on board Voyager all about? Here is what we’ve sent, in the hope that an alien civilization will someday chance upon it and get to know something about us.

Cheers!

Hey great post, i just spent ages sifting through all the images on that disk, as well as the audio.
Its nice to watch a reflection of the positive side to planet earth and us, as documented in those images.

One thing stuck out to me though, i realise we wanted to give a good description of what and who we are, but isn't it a bit scary giving everything out as information?
Where we are, how we are made, etc etc

You're welcome!
Hope you enjoyed listening to the music, though pretty dated. No RAP stuff eh?
It's all from the 70s!

Cheers!

I consider the lack of rap "music" to be a huge bonus.

A quick google search will tell you what's on the record. Just a lot of earth sounds, explanations of who we are and where we are, etc, etc.

I remember the significance of this record at the beginning of the movie Starman when Voyager is intercepted by the spacecraft.

And isn't the Voyager probe blown up near the beginning of one of the Star Trek movies by the Klingons?

Voyager or V'Ger was in the original Star Trek The Motion Picture. It was picked up by an entity of conscious machines in search of its creator.

I'm not sure if it was in the Star Trek films that followed.

It sure was. V'ger is the creator of the borg.

^^titorite...the idea that the Borg came from v'ger is very debatable among trekkers...there are many timeline problems with that idea.

...also, to the OP --

Nobody (especially a race advanced enough to intercept voyager) uses record players anymore. They are most likely using mp3 players or maybe even iPods.

I suppose it's a good thing they included the record player along with the record.

Seriously though -- it's very cool to think about this record being around for hundreds of thousands of years...these sounds of the human race will outlive the human race.

The record has always been a cool feature. If you can find it there is an awesum book called Murmurs of Earth which details the audio and video portions of the golden record.

At the time there was some contreversy as the record does give clues as to where we are in the universe.

This brings to mind the old joke........

The aliens sent a message in return, "Send more Chuck Berry!"

Amazing how much they managed to cram into that record!!
