BREAKING NEWS!

RAF Tornado's intercept 8 Russian aircraft approaching UK airspace.

This is extremely worrying mainly due to the large amount that was heading towards our island.

I guess these are the same bombers:

news.bbc.co.uk...

Norway has scrambled F-16 jet fighters to shadow eight Russian long-range bombers in the Arctic, a Norwegian armed forces spokesman says.

The Tupolev-95 Bear bombers flew in international airspace from the Barents Sea to the Atlantic, then turned back, Lt-Col John Inge Oegland told the BBC.

Definitely looks like they're trying to test NATO's response around that area.

it's something to be worried about..

I don't Russia has ever sent a force that large to the UK, not even during the Cold War.

Interesting timing too... both Bush and Putin are at the APEC summit in Australia.

And Israel has just bombed Syria...

Hmmm, I don't like where this is going.

Apparently the Russian were VERY close to British airspace, some reports that the force entered.

some more information

They headed back to their base in north Russia without incident and are still thought to be in the air, with Nato tracking their progress.

plus, this little detail is abit worrying too..

The Bear Tu95 planes - which can carry nuclear and Cruise missiles - were detected by Nato early this morning.

Whats there to be worried about.....?
They were intercepted by the Norwiegen F15/16's way way before they posed a threat to us.
If it looked like they posed a threat they would have been shot down before getting anywhere near UK air space.
This is just smoke and mirrors stuff.....!

Though having said that maybe Russia is trying to prevoke a reaction to create some sort of international incident......?

Alternatively....just military exercises because this isn't the first time this has happened.

Who knows?

expect more flights like these

in the end, Russian aircraft did not enter airspace.

It would of been an act of war if it did.

i think they did cross into our space,

The UK's Royal Air Force has launched fighter jets to intercept eight Russian military planes flying in airspace patrolled by Nato, UK officials say.

A Norwegian officer, Lt Col John Inge Oegland, told the BBC the Russian Tupolev Tu-95 Bear bombers flew in international airspace from the Barents Sea to the Atlantic, before turning back.

Theres been several similar incidents in recent months, Lt-Col Oegland added.

What if these old Russian bombers are a diversion, surely Russia must have better bombers??

Also that is quite alot of bombers towards our air space, why oh why did we get rid of our UK bomber force? shame we could of flown some bombers their way when they went back, or we should of escorted them all way home to Russian border.

They didn't.

It would of been an act of war and the RAF would have shot them down. Then a major conflict with Russia.

I don't think they would automatically shoot them down. I imagine they'd at least try to notify them of their "error" and escort them out first.

I doubt it

The RAF took off from Yorkshire, that is where your missile defence system is based and some of your main bases.

I live in the UK and found this quite alarming. On the one hand i think the Russkkies are testiong the new Eurofighter reaction time. On the other hand the film Threads keeps comming to the fore in my mind

I believe that these overflights by Russia the past few months are probing missions, intel gathering, it is very alarming.

They have put alot of support and effort into Iran and probably think a conflict is on the horizon, these missions put them on the Iranian side.

This is pure speculation, but it doesn't take Einstein to figure out why the Russians would be probing.

I hope I am wrong.

I have to agree with you, JackKat. It seems as if things are starting to happen now, with Iran having Russia as an ally, Israel attacking Syria and Syria counterattacking Israel. I heard Russia was doing its best to get fighter-type planes to Iran ASAP.

It's more like Russia trying to show the world its a superpower again and their nation should be taken more seriously. Which is being reported on the media as the main reason.

Get real. The Russians were flying a few clapped out old bangers in international airspace and were detected hundreds upon hundreds of miles away from the UK. During the cold war it happened every other day of the week.
And while they were flying around the skies, one if not two British trident submarines were quietly floating underneath the North Atlantic with enough firepower to take most of Russia back to the dark ages.
Quit fretting. It's nothing new.

The above poster is exactly right. I mean yeah this is a big deal but not really. Russia just flying around some old stuff because now they have a little money to actually put gas in the tanks of those things. I dont think they are trying to do anything outrageous...that would just be plain stupid.
