Adventurer Steve Fossett's plane missing

By SANDRA CHEREB, Associated Press Writer

MINDEN, Nev. - Millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett, who has cheated death time and again in his successful pursuit of aviation records, was missing Tuesday after taking off in a single-engine plane the day before to scout locations for a land-speed record, officials said.

Fossett, the first person to circle the globe in a balloon, went missing while looking for suitable locations to break the land speed record in a car. They are searching in a grid an area over 7,500 square miles in Nevada.

Two odd elements: he never radioed that he was in distress, and authorities haven't received a signal from the locater in the plane that activates in a crash or rough landing. Since he had two full fuel tanks, he might have veered far off course before landing in the desert somewhere.

That is a HUGE area out there.
And it all looks the same.
I've been out there fossil hunting before.
Drove past Barron Hilton's landing strip at the Flying M Ranch (compound really)

Lots of places he could land though..Dry lake beds etc..
I hope they find him A-OK.
But I don't have a good feeling about this.

I feel the same. They say the terrain is varied, but you'd have to think he could find a decent place to land out there. Why wouldn't he radio? Not good.

Might as well close this thread. There's already one out there (below). Sorry.

I am assuming that the authorities are searching the playa near Black Rock, NV for Mr. Fosset.

It was on the high desert playa (a dry alkali lake bed) near Gerlach, that the Noble team ran the Thrust SSC land speed record car.

It is a vast area, maybe 20 by 40 miles of flat out nothing, except when the Burning Man festival is going on.

Radio reception a bit dodgy out there too, in some areas.

Let's all keep good thoughts!
