Spreading deserts threaten world food supply

GENEVA (Reuters) - Spreading deserts and degradation of farm land due to climate change will pose a serious threat to food supplies for the world's surging population in coming years, a senior United Nations scientist warned on Friday.

M.V.K. Sivakumar of the U.N.'s World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) said the crunch could come in just over a decade as all continents see more weather-related disasters like heat waves, floods, landslides and wildfires.

The food "crunch" is on its way according to the article, and with only a 10-year timeline, we'll probably feel the economic pinch much sooner. Even now food prices are climbing steadily, presumably due to rising fuel costs.

The article lists Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe as the areas most affected, but since so many US food products are imported, we can take no comfort. When you add to that the recent NASA report on alarming changes to come in US weather patterns, it becomes more and more difficult to not be pessimistic about the future of our food supply.

....thought to grab this from the two-month-ago posts.... interesting clip about food shortages. I tried a post about a UN study / how cheap it is to feed the world, feel on deaf ears, people actually posted, "Why is it the US's problem?" Standards of living is everyone's problem IMO, societies that fail aren't contribution's to humanity let alone progression for future generations.
