German govenment to use email trojans to fight terrorists

news.bbc.co.uk

German government plans to spy on terror suspects by deploying malicious e-mails have drawn sharp criticism.

The e-mails would contain Trojans - software that secretly installs itself on suspects' computers, allowing agents to search the hard drives.

The measure would form part of a new anti-terrorism bill.

A spokeswoman for the opposition Free Democrats, Gisela Piltz, called the proposal a totally unacceptable intrusion into privacy.

This looks like quite a drastic measure that definitely needs a rethink in my opinion. Like the criticism in the article says, this is a total intrusion of privacy - even if it is targeted at known terrorists.

There are a number of ways that this could backfire, not least if the the trojans are sent to non-dangerous people, causing a total privacy breach.

...or perhaps that's what the government want to do? Spy on their own citizens.

This is completely insane...

You won't even be able to trust governments or anything, and then they'll make anti-virus and anti spyware software that detects government spyware illegal but detects everything else...

Wait a moment, germany just passed some strange laws a few weeks ago about banning certain security software.

I think this is related and part of something bigger and more ominious!
