Whos scanning my ports and what do i do?

Im using Mcaffe firewall and visual trace, And i keep getting a port scan attack. What do I do, do I contact someone on the visual trace info paine or do nothing? simplenet.com in tuscaloosa? maybe its nothing but im not used to it.. or this program visual trace.

There's no point in doing anything.

Most people don't know how to secure their systems, so they get infected with virus, trogens, etc.

These programs then scan the internet/DSL/Cable segment the pc is on, looking to spread/replicate themselves, and the PC owners dont even know their infected.

Of course, if you had the time you could trace them all and send complaints to the ISP and hope they would notify their customers, but generally nothing will happen.

Use peer guardian. It shows you incoming connections and restricts certain connections (like from the RIAA or MPAA).

Oh right, cheers i do have that peer guardian 2, forgot all about it il run that aswel. Im already using a firewall, spyblaster, spybot, black ice on paranoid block ;-) avg anti virus, xsoftspy, xp anti spy and socket lock. Ive disabled microsoft client n print sharing and net bios, im all 'decombobbed'.. lol... shut down unsafe components in windows like remote desktop etc..

I cant get much stealthier.. until i can get zone alarm set up properly ;-) Im just fedup with this balloon popup! 'click here to trace the attacker' bla bla..

Try using wireshark ( formely ethereal ).Packet sniffer . Just make sure you are on a network you have permision to use it on.

Software firewalls are only as good as their programming. They will always be software exploits for any kind of software including Zonealarm.

What I suggest you do is go out and buy a hardware firewall (router) They are fairly inexpensive and are a lot more secure then a software firewall. Most electronic stores have them.

what can i say window is flawed,hackers are always one step ahead,even if you are loaded with firewalls and security,if a hacker knows what theyr doin he will take you like easy pickets.
but dont worry about port scans,these are just to scan which computer security is weak,after the port scan they try to attack,but dont worry

If all else fails make a note of the days and times that the hacker is scanning your ports and during those times simply unplug your modem from the internet.

Thanks guys I lost track of this post. I am using a reuter by the way, as for the making note of days and times and unplugging.. isnt possible its too random. Hardly any lately too. I think my security is good enough anyway.. if I could get zone alarm configured right I would be in good stealth.. its not installed tho.

Ahhh, behold, the power of a router. It's the main reason why i am 100% virus/trojan/malware/spyware/adware free.

If the IP which the scans are coming from are random as all hell, then you're ok, it's just as others have already explained - it goes on 24/7.

If the IP of the scan is the same IP, then it's time to start digging deeper.

just go to your web browser and type in 192.168.1.1 and it will bring up the firewall configuration and you can block ports and stuff. most are blocked already aside from the ones internet explorer uses.

The router IP depends on the router, they are not all the same.

Also, considering the OP's questioning shows a lesser level of experience, blocking ports in the firewall is probably not the best thing to do.

As suggested above, buy a decent router with a decent firewall and stop worrying. That's whats kept me free n easy over the last 4 or 5 years!
