I think it's pretty obvious that this technology will be mainly for commercial purposes.
I can resize pictures without distortion with a free software tool, but I can't take a photograph and stretch the width across a full page without
having to crop out much of the bottom half of the picture to leave the page clear for print.
To this extent, there's nothing really all that sinister about it. It's just a useful tool for advertising.
As for cropping, that will never go away, because often there is stuff in the periphery of a picture that you just don't want.
What really caught my eye, besides the brilliance of the concept, was how images can be manipulated so effectively to be something that is not and
show something that was not.
The intended purpose of the technology is quite benign and fascinating.
The abuse potential goes far beyond the potential of previous image processing technologies and probably goes far beyond what was demonstrated in the
video.
