Ammunition Shortage

apnews.myway.com

In Milwaukee, supplies of .40-caliber handgun bullets and .223-caliber rifle rounds have gotten so low the department has repeatedly dipped into its ammunition reserves. Some weapons training has already been cut by 30 percent, and lessons on rifles have been altered to conserve bullets.

I saw this article as well. Even thought about posting it. There are a couple of things that stand out to me. A shortage of 5.56mm(.223 Cal), 7.62mm (.308cal) and 9mm ammo would seem related to war usage. I've heard that some units (Ranger and SF) have already switched back to a .45 cal round so I could understand that as well. Shortages in other rounds stand out to me. I don't know of any weapon used by the US millitary that uses either the .38cal or .40 cal. Though I believe at one time there was a .38 sidearm in millitary service mostly used by pilots.

.38 and .40 caliber are used heavily by police agencies and I can't figure out why there would be a shortage in either round unless production has been shifted to the rounds in use by the millitary.

Another idea i've had is have any of these agencies thought about reloading their own brass? It's not that expensive or time consuming and if you don't wanna put your life in the hands of something you've reloaded yourself, why not do that to your training rounds so you can qualify your people and keep your good stuff for fiedl use? Can't resist saying this "Are the police too good to police up their own brass?"

I'll be watching prices and availabillity on ammo closer in the futur I believe.

Maybe we should ask the US military to stop shooting indiscriminately and randomly in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Conserve Ammo! Help save the cops back home!

Martial law preparations? Anyway, I'll get stocks as soon as I can. With all the talks about economic depression, martial law, north american union, false-flag terrorist attack... some ammo will be needed soon if the globalists go ahead with their plans.

I can't understand how we'd run out of bullets. I know we shoot a lot but you'd think we'd have some mega-plant pumping bullets out.

Congress needs to look into this. These bullet shortage are weakening Americas defenses.

being conspiratorial for a minute, there could be a few more reasons why ammo is in short supply other than the war..

1. it's deliberate (as in there may be an event in the future where they don't want you to have any ammo to fight with)

2. someone else is stockpiling it (private army being funded somewhere?)

3. resources (they're running out and so are limiting the amount to the public).

as an aside, there was a theory in the uk about the coins there and how you could tell when a war was due because the quality of the metal they were made from deteriorated as they used the better metals for the upcoming war.

Okay.....

An ammo shortage really makes no sense.

What does make sense is the possibility of the story of a shortage being spread to cover up for the removal of ammo from the general populace, due to (as stated by a previous poster) Martial Law preparations.

I'm going shopping tomorrow (today).....and Forsakenwayfarer, I'll let you know if my husband is able to get ammo for his Desert Eagle.

Well, the growing tensions with Iran and the serious posibilty of conflict with Iran, North Korea, Russia, Pakistan(others also) would be a good reason for the limiting/halt of selling ammunition to civilians if the Pentagon thought it was imminent...making it all go into military stockpiles. Not even military units in the states would get what they would normally get if there was a massive stockpiling happening.

Maybe Iraq and Afghanistan arent the only battlefields that we will be playing on? I really dont see ammunition plants not being to pump out enough bullets. Wouldnt you think that they would be built to meet certain quotas...like if the old USSR had marched into western Europe? We would have needed a lot of bullets to fight them. The Iraqi and Afghani wars arent large conflicts. If the US military infrastructure of today really cant handle the fighting in Iraq/Afghan...This would be a clear cut sign to me if i was in Tehran to march right into Iraq tomorrow and do whatever else i wanted to do.

Well all i can say is that if i get drafted, im gonna pillage like a crackhead looking for a fix. >:|

Really admirable and well thought out comment there Gazz...

What a shame that American soldiers fighting and dieing in Iraq are so incompetent they can't utilize their gun sites and have to indiscriminately and randomly fire their weapons around hoping to hit the bad guys. Wow... :shk:

From the many marine fire fight clips i have seen from Iraq they spray a LOT of bullets.I cant tell you if there in the right direction as you normaly cant see any hint of returning fire but one would think if the clips are not media managed then they are indeed on target. They do use a lot of bullets, and if one watches clips from the brits out there and Afganistan you will see we use controled bursts-mind you we havnt got the budget you boys have,I am surprised we dont use spud guns

Would be interesting to see if there is an ammo shortage over the pond, would make sense if there is another conflict looming to have everything needed

BTW who are the main bullet makers?

A company named Alliant Technologies I believe is the largest supplier of ammo used by the US millitary. (Stock symbol ATK of all things.) I believe Alliant also has a civillian side to it's ammunition business. The two companies I see the most ammo made by on the civillian side are Remington and Winchester. Not quoting any sources on that just going by the brands I see most commonly at the department stores and outdoor type places.

Yep, can't you feel the love, and the apparent high regards "some" Americans have for the U.S. military?....
:shk:

*Sigh*....Anyways, there have been other threads about this supposed "shortage of ammunition", but out here in Wyoming there is no shortage of ammunition I have noticed. I could be wrong though.

One of my friend in the US said that the owner of his gun shop said that the prices of most bullets would hike by 15% starting september 1. So, to everyone, I suggest you buy everything you need before september.

"There exists but a single government-owned and contractor-operated facility in the United States for the production of military specification small-arms ammunition for the entire U.S. military. It is the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Lake City, Mo.

I red it here
Is this real? What if the government would seize it and stop distribution to citizens? Also, wouldn't be better to have many corporations doing the job, as in a free-market system?
