everyone on the UK military (and many beyond) have signed the Official Secrets Act and could be bound by this act on the reveal what they have seen, heard or done while in service.

I think this is more of an update to the policy following the release of the Iranian held troops and the media fight to get their stories, and the fact that some of them got paid by the British press for their stories, while others have not had the opportunity or been in the right place to have something to sell.

Some of what our military see and done is very sensitive and we would all want that kind of information to be keep safe, but it is very hard to have rules and policy in place to cover all instances.

"They will also be barred from playing multi-player computer games and sending text messages, photographs and audio or video material without permission if they relate to defence matters."

Thats put an end to the Youtube videos then.

Exactly. Some of these video's and blogs could be used by an enemy to gain operational knowledge. Whilst it might just look cool to us watching a firefight with the Taleban, they could use it to gauge the best way to engage UK forces.

If they were given out operational procedures, then I clearly understand, why the MOD is enforcing this. But to have to get permission to give personal experiences or to complain to love ones about the lack of resources, kitwear etc, is complete censorship.

The MOD is just trying to control everything, so it is not criticised by the squaddie. It is oks for the head of the Army in Iraq to Criticize the MOD but it is not oks for Squaddies to criticise the MOD, something very wrong there.
