I'm under the impression that it still takes more energy to produce the actual solar panel than it would produce in it's life time (was brought up in a discussion I had with my Boss). If this is the case then Solar Energy is still not the renewable energy that we think it is.
I don't have any actual hard facts but I'm sure somoeone knows more.
Anyone care to add to this (or debunk it)?
