Cities Sue Gangs In Bid To Stop Violence

But critics say such lawsuits go too far, limiting otherwise lawful activities and unfairly targeting minority youth.

"If you're barring people from talking in the streets, it's difficult to tell if they're gang members or if they're people discussing issues," said Peter Bibring, an attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California. "And it's all the more troubling because it doesn't seem to be effective."

I believe this is another nail in the coffin where our citizen's rights lay bare. If we stood on corners discussing important issues, all wearing abovetopsecret.com shirts, we could be subject to these lawsuits. We wouldn't even have to all be of the same style of dress or of the same color, as not all street gangs have a particular color they identify themselves with. Any group could be subject to curfews, not being allowed to peaceably congregate, refused the right to talk to people in passing cars, and if found violating they can be arrested and sentenced up to a year in jail. I can see where these lawsuits stem from but the potential safety is NOT worth precious liberties.... liberties that are being stripped away one by one.

There's a video in the link towards the bottom.

Proactive people focus their efforts in the Circle of Influence. They work on the things they can do something about. The nature of their energy is positive, enlarging and magnifying, causing their Circle of Influence to increase.

Reactive People, on the other hand focus their efforts in the Circle of Concern. They focus on the weakness of other people , the problems in the environment, and circumstances over which they have no control. Their focus results in blaming and accusing attitudes, reative language , and increased feelings of victimization.

That would be Steven Covey, 7 Habits.

Personally, I plant crepe myrtle trees and flowers in front of the corner store where the hoodlums hang out and sell their pills. You cannot destroy evil; you can only displace it.

Check out what they're doing in this prison in the philipines:

Prisoner's Algorithm March

Give the children something positive to involve themselves in... and they won't be gathering in criminal gangs in front of the corner store.

While I have no problem with the idea of cracking down on crime I think that the approach at hand would do more do endanger civil liberty's then anything else. The best way to deal with gangs is or would be do legalize dope which would remove much of the criminal element. The next step would be to have an surge of law enforcement officials in gang strong hold areas with the aim of clearing out the remaining criminal elements.

There are other social issues at work as well such ensuring that there are education opportunity's available for those who want it and ensuring that ways are found to lift the incomes of people on the lower wages this could help to deal with some of the underlying issues that lead to gang membership.

What about all the gangs in the State Capitol? The ones that bare the red and blue colors with their repsective parties? Seems to me, you'd get a lot further sueing these gangsters than people on the streets. These gangs are responsible for the real violence throughout the world.

What a mockery of the U.S. Justice system.

It's very hypocritical...... these lawsuits can be easily abused. If it becomes common to put extra laws on people who havent commited crimes then a concerned group of citizens can go unnoticed between Compton OGs.

Doing that is proactive? Why even bother to sue when they don't have jobs to pay?

Next they will be raiding homes at will. Man, this is going way to far. Profiling all the way and they will target specific people/ethnic groups/areas as well.

Give them jobs and pay for some vocational training so they can become PRODUCTIVE citizens of society. They should give that a try first before doing this.
