Khalid al-Mashadani, who is believed to be the most senior Iraqi in the Sunni Islamist al Qaeda. Al-Mashadani, who was caught this month, has told his U.S. military interrogators a prominent al Qaeda-led group is just a front and its leader fictitious, a military spokesman said on July 18, 2007. Brigadier-General Kevin Bergner told a news conference that Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, leader of the self-styled Islamic State of Iraq, which was purportedly set up last year, did not exist.

Ofcource "Al Qaeda" in iraq , the ISI is a fake. so was Zarqawi. The whole thing was concucted and controlled by the CIA.

I think a majority of the world now has a good idea that Al Qaeda is being used by the CIA to persue American interests around the globe.The notion that a small group of arabs that do criminal terrorist acts can lead to their country of origin being invaded is frankly disturbing.(well actualy Saudi arabia wasnt harmed in the slightest but you get my point)
These were not acts of war by those nations,but criminal activities by a small religious group.Its just amazing the many are punished for the sins of just a few!

You can tell the fake media news in the press these days as NO reporter puts his name to these stories,and we all know they pride themselfs on getting their name in print with their stories!So if its a white lie from the green zone being forced on the papers check for the reporters name and if there isnt one-ignore the drivel

I know what you mean, its like a tragic comedy.
Half the time I want to cry its so damn sad, and half the time I want to laugh because its so damn absurd.

Absurd as in we kill this guy three or four times, then they tell us he never even existed.
Absurd as in they tell us Saddam has WMD, then they tell us they never even existed.
And the saddest, funniest, most absurd thing about this is the continued denial by a majority of my fellow Americans as to what is going on.

That's surprising, i mean what the hell is Al-qaeda? Whenever there is a terrorist attack it has 'al qaeda blueprints' ' al- qaeda affilitaed group' attached to it. Just becasue Al qaeda used car bombs in co- ordinated attacks doesn't mean they are the only ones who thought of it or who have used it. The media really need to keep up with events and keep people who don't look into these things better infromed. Becasue if i was just tuned into Sky News, CNN i would think Bin Laden is in his cave ordering every car bomb in Iraq.

I'm not sure what this is about. Al Qaeda work of fiction which is the subject of debate, or the fact that the name Islamic State of Iraq was supposed to be an Iraqi face as a cover for foreign fighters.

Although al-Qaida in Iraq's rank-and-file are mostly Iraqis, the Iraqi group's top leadership is dominated by foreigners, Bergner said. That includes al-Masri, who joined an al-Qaida forerunner in Egypt in the 1980s and later helped train fighters who drove the Soviet army from Afghanistan.

Pointing to the foreign influence within al-Qaida in Iraq could undermine support for the organization among nationalistically minded Iraqis, including some in insurgent groups that have broken with al-Qaida.

In an effort to give al-Qaida an Iraqi face, Bergner said al-Mashhadani and al-Masri established a front organization known as the Islamic State of Iraq, which the general described as "a virtual organization in cyberspace."

In Web postings, the Islamic State of Iraq has identified its leader as Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, a name indicating Iraqi origin, with the Egyptian al-Masri as minister of war. There are no known photos of al-Baghdadi.

Bergner said al-Mashhadani had told interrogators that al-Baghdadi is a "fictional role" created by al-Masri and that an actor with an Iraqi accent is used for audio recordings of speeches posted on the Web.

"In his words, the Islamic State of Iraq is a front organization that masks the foreign influence and leadership within al-Qaida in Iraq in an attempt to put an Iraqi face on the leadership of al-Qaida in Iraq," Bergner said.

Proclamation of the Islamic State is widely seen as a blunder by al-Qaida because it alienated independently minded insurgent groups that opposed the religious zealots' goal of an Islamic caliphate.

Zarqawi was mentioned in the article, but then hes dead so theres no point in talking about him. Of course people here were confused on the story about thinking Al Qaeda is a fake which the poster Tokyo Rose was trying to put out by twisting the story.
