Personally I believe that WW3 has already started. The War of/ on Terror/ Terra/Earth is this war, it will be neverending. The world is starting to feel like a scene out of Terry Gilliams "Brazil".

Isn't there a law preventing any one country from laying claim to Antarctica? Why isn't it the same for the NP, hmm?

Who owns Antarctica?

A number of countries have claimed soveriegn rights to Antarctic Territory; several of these claims overlap, and could potentially be disputed. Australia has the largest territorial claim, claiming 42% of the Antarctic Continent. The Antarctic Treaty (signed in 1961) puts all territorial claims on hold for the duration of the treaty, so no one actually owns Antarctica at the moment.

There are eight countries who own land in the Arctic region; Canada, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Russia, and the United States.

And now it looks like the US of A has finally woken up!

Russian media assert that the Healy's mission signals that the United States, along with Canada, is actively joining the competition for resources in the Arctic.
The lead scientist on the expedition scoffs at the political implications.

"We're basically just doing science," said Larry Mayer, director of the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping at the University of New Hampshire. "There's no flag-dropping on this trip," he said in an interview from Durham, N.H.

Here’s the latest on Russian moves aimed at force projection. 15 years on, it’s back to square one. Another Cold War in the making?

Russia is resuming its Soviet-era practice of sending its bomber aircraft on long-range flights, President Vladimir Putin has said. Mr Putin said the halting of such flights 15 years ago had affected Russia's security because "not everyone followed our example".
The move comes a week after Russian bombers flew within a few hundred miles of the US Pacific island of Guam. Russia has recently been stressing a more assertive foreign policy.

China-Russia war games under way

Russia, China and four Central Asian members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) conducted their largest war games in the southern Ural Mountains on Friday.

The Russian and Chinese armed forces have begun their first joint military exercises.

Marines will storm beaches and paratroopers will descend in a mock invasion of an imaginary country. The eight-day operation got underway with consultations between military delegations from the two countries in Vladivostok, in Russia's far east.

Analysts say China and Russia are signalling they are prepared to counter US dominance in international affairs.

Additionally, with Russia commencing it's long range patrolling with it's bombers after 15 years, there seems to be a new belligerence, for countering American ambitions in the area.

YES, it belongs to Denmark. That's what we have been taught in school for a century. And please don't say Greenland when you talk about the claims, as Greenland has been part of Denmark since the age of the vikings. You don't say Alaska when you talk about the US claims on the area, uhh?

By means of logic and by the most common method to settle the right to disputed waters, it belongs to Denmark. It is by the distance to the nearest landmass within a 200 nautical mile limit. On the map provided by Mikesingh you can see the 200 mile limit plotted, but a nautical mile is more than a statue mile. In the end it will be up to the International Court in Haag to settle.

NO, I don't think THIS will trigger WWIII, but an enviromental havoc it will if greed gets its way.

Really I don't think it is nothing but domestic politics being played out in preparation of the upcoming presidental elections in Russia. National pride is an old card to play in any natiomal elegtion.

The bizarre twist about the whole thing is the Russian claim is based on an amateurish scam. A 13-year old Finnish boy blew it. It's footage the movie Titanic which has been manipulated and the Russian flag put in. Nobody has ever been down there. Not even the Yanks.
