Yes, good points westy and Canada.

In fact I wonder if the term 'interim' isn't being misunderstood on the forum? It doesn't necessarily mean 'temporary' which seems to be the sense that has been adopted by some posters.

It might just be interim in the sense that it fits into the inventory between the F-15E and the B-2, using WW2 parlance - if the former is a light bomber and the latter a heavy bomber, isn't this interim bomber then an old style medium bomber?

I think you might be confusing 'interim' with 'intermediate', waynos. I think interim means the same as 'stop-gap'

Waynos,

No offense, but I think you may be the one misunderstanding the "interm". Here's the defenition right out of websters:

Interm: in the interveining time, temporary

That is from Page 602 of Websters! So an inter bomber is a temporary bomber to hold over until the next one is ready to go. Just trying to help.

No offence taken, and you are both correct in defining 'interim' (Tim - why do you keep spelling it as interm?)

However etymologically speaking 'interim' simply means 'in the midst of' (OED - a bit better than Websters) as well as meaning temporarily (ie in the midst of the old and the permanent new - same meaning), because this has no appearance of being a temporary programme I simply wondered if this was the sense which the USAF intended, with it fitting 'in the midst of' the F-15E and B-2 in the inventory.

Sorry about that! I'm not good at spelling and I was in a hurry. I'll work on that spelling.
