Bush Nominates Surgeon General Who Supports 'Ex-Gay' Therapy

www.alternet.org

Holsinger believes in ex-gay therapy. He therefore views homosexuality as a curable disease. Every major, reputable medical organization rejects ex-gay therapy and the notion that homosexuality constitutes a mental illness. Every single one. The most notable of these organizations is the American Psychological Association, the country's largest organization of mental health professionals.

Bush is nominating a person to be Surgeon General, the highest medical position in the US government, who believes that a homosexual can be cured?

What is he thinking?

How can Bush really think this man is going to be accepted and taken seriously as Surgeon General by the rest of the medical community when he has "crack pot" ideas and beliefs like these!

I sure hope Bush decides to nominate a different person and lets this guy go back to the rock he crawled out from under.

I sometimes wonder if Bush is on some really strong medication. I'm not bashing him with this, he could be having some serious problems that we're not being told about.

This thing of him doing strange things and talking like he's got a mental 'short out', are starting to sound worrisome. This makes no sense politically. He's bound to have a real fight on his hands.

First, I think it's wrong to completely write off a person because you don't agree with one opinion in his arsenal of opinions. Have you looked at any of his other credentials to see if he is in fact a good candidate for the job?

Second, curable homosexuality is not a rare opinion in the field. Up until 1973, all of the organizations cited in the article publically believed that homosexuality was a curable mental disorder. This was officially changed due to pressure of homosexuals in the field that were offended. Everything has to be so PC nowadays. Even as recently as 1998, official positions were being published because a large portion of the field still believed that homosexuality was a curable disorder through therapy.

Actually, his credentials aren't bad.

Wikipedia - James Wilson Holsinger, Jr.

It still remains that the rest of the medical community have to respect a man in the position of the Surgeon General, how can medical professionals respect the highest medical position in the US when he has beliefs that homosexuality is a disease/or a mental illness and can be cured when all major medical and psychiatric organizations say it is not a disease or mental illness and can not be cured through therapy..

Is this going to be one of the items on his agenda if he becomes Surgeon General? That all homosexuals should receive therapy to cure them of their illness?

AlterNet is maybe the worst news source, with the possible exception of Pravda.

AlterNet lies about the facts even when it quotes the facts that it is lying about. You can't get much more brazenly corrupt than that.

There are credible news sources who are covering this matter, so there really is no reason to cite AlterNet, unless you want to be a part of their lies.

Rather than viewing homosexuality as a "curable disease" as AlterNet states, this is how homosexuals are viewed by the Doctor and his "ex-gay" program.

Holsinger and his wife were founders of Hope Springs Community Church. This church, according to its pastor, Rev. David Calhoun, has an "ex-gay" ministry that administers "reparative therapy" to people who no longer wish to be gay. "We see that as an issue not of orientation but a lifestyle," Calhoun says. "We have people who seek to walk out of that lifestyle."

Changeable behavior, or lifestyle, is a far cry from curable disease, but hey, let's not let honesty get in the way of a good spin.
