Sure but the American government did it's best to convince the American public that a nuclear war was not something that could be won and thus something that had to be avoided at all cost.

The Cold War was, in effect, an attempt for each side to produce SO many weapons that the possibly of a preemptive strike became a non-starter.

Actually both sides soon realised that a defense against ICBMs were possible and practical and while the US dismantled it's own rather extensive defenses in the late 60's the USSR kept building up it's own to their current strength of several thousands of missiles ready to fire.

Each side came to know that even in the best scenario there would be enough weapons that would survive and be successfully launched to make 'winning' anything but.

The USSR from the start invested the national effort in preparing to fight and win a full scale nuclear war as can be seen in their vast public shelter creation as well as cities designed for rapid evacuation with massive storehouses of vital supplies on the outskirts of the cities to feed and supply the people after those that could not be evacuated emerged from their shelters to resume work in the hardened factories that remained.

And so, MAD worked.

MAD did not work as is obvious by the fact that the Russians kept preparing their defenses in open contradiction to the notion that defense could not work and the war could not be won.

Today we are seeing a shift in thinking that is ominous and exceedingly dangerous. The concept of highly accurate targeting and 'tactical' nukes makes their use more palatable.

Only those who have no defense against such weaponry are really worried but i don't think the US or Russia are among them..

The mere fact that the U.S. government has openly discussed using nukes to destroy Iran's nuke sites is very troubling.

Why? The not so depleted Uranium being used by the hundreds of tons in Iraq is as much if not greater damage to the environment with no good reason for it's use anywhere in sight. At least the argument can be made that nuclear type weaponry is required to damage such structures but why shoot people with (Not so or rather NS)DU?

That kind of thinking is irresponsible in the extreme and will only foster similar positions in other countries.

If the US is going to continue terrorizing the third world is should probably not proceed to prove that it is completely rational and will use whatever means it has to destroy those people it is already slowly killing or poisoning by other means. The death toll is Iraq is not probably up to around a million so why hold back and not just nuke those you are going to rob of their resources and or lives? That sort of foreign policy i can accept as it's clear and well directed and can be resisted by right minded people everywhere.

We are entering dangerous, dangerous times.

The dangerous times are when tens of millions are starving to death, or dieing of entirely preventable diseases, each year without understanding who their true enemies are or what they are capable of. I am all for evil ( and it's in my opinion a valid way of describing the actions of those who are directing these events) to come fully out of the closet so that people may see what they are up against and what it might take to prevail.
