If you have been sharp and on your toes you will have noticed that this is the second thread on this topic to float through the forum. The Mods took particular interest in the topic, and moved the first thread to the Mod Boards for staff discussion.

This second thread was re-created to allow the ATS community to discuss the idea of adding DivX™ embed tags to ATS.

What is DivX™?

DivX is the name of a popular new video compression technology developed by DivX, Inc. The format was developed to enable users to play and create high-quality videos in a fast and convenient way, while still maintaining the best quality possible. The DivX codec is currently the most popular MPEG-4 based codec because of its quality, speed and efficiency as well as the wide range of DVD players that support DivX.
SOURCE | DivXMovies.com
MORE INFO | DivX.com

For the most part, DivX™ is just another video format that allows for high definition video (even full HD @ 1080p) to be streamed and/or downloaded via the freely available DivX™ Player. DivX™ also provides free codecs, web players, and converters so encoding your videos to DivX™ is a snap. DivX™ also has their own video sharing community (much like YouTube™ and Google™) called Stage6™.

Why should we care about DivX™ @ ATS?
Currently we have the ability to embed YouTube™ and Google™ videos, which is really a great feature. However, the FlashVideo™ format used by these two video communities is not the best format to use when doing video research and analysis. The FlashVideo™ format is highly compressed, lossy, and low resolution. Just think about all the UFO and 9/11 videos that we have all tried to analyze, but couldn't because the quality was so bad.

DivX™, on the other hand, provides very high video resolution with very little loss. DivX™ also provides a free web player that can be embedded in web pages (the same way we currently embed YouTube™ and Google™ videos). With this player, you can easily fullscreen just by double clicking the video, and you can even download the video stream to a file on your computer for further analysis and subsequent viewing. Not only that, but the DivX™ Player even gives you the option to burn a downloaded DivX™ video directly to DVD!

Another really great thing about DivX™ format is that the DivX™ video you want to embed doesnt have to be hosted on a community site (Stage6™). You can provide the player a link to any video you have made that is in DivX™ format, and it will play it no problems. This ability, paired with the freely available codecs, means that any video creator has the freedom to choose how he/she will publish his/her video.

Bottom Line
I would just like to be able to embed higher quality videos here at ATS for the benefit of video analysis. YouTube™ and Google™ are great for some things, but isn't the best for video research. Personally, i think the best candidate for a higher quality video format would be DivX™ due to its much higher resolutions, enhanced feature set, publishing options, and popularity. Just imagine a UFO or 9/11 video direct from someone's video camera streaming to you in Full HD @ 1080p!

What say you, ATS??

Ofcourse. We need this, especially in the 9/11 and UFO's forum. Not that I pay any attention to the latter.

Yeah I like that little feature too!

Once you start to use your DivX™ Player, Codecs, and Converter you'll be hooked. The customization features are bountiful in each of these. Good stuff!

Well, the staff is looking at the idea right now. If they decide to create DivX tags for us, it shouldn't take Skeptic very long to give them to us.

Just keep your fingers crossed and hope we get 'em!
The more members that come in here and say they want DivX, the more likely we are to get 'em, right? Seems logical to me. lol Of course, it's all up to the amigos, but bumping this thread couldn't hurt!

Hey, lets start a poll: Would you like to see DivX™ tags added? (I'll assume that the posts above count as positive votes)

Would you like to have DivX™ tags?
YES: 100%
NO: 0%
Based on 5 votes from visitors to this thread.
NON-SCIENTIFIC

In the meantime, here is a Stage6™ video describing how easy it is to convert standard AVI files to DivX™ Format.

Here is a good example of a standard high quality DivX™ video.

Here is an example of HD-DVD quality in a DivX™ stream.

Here is a good HD-TV quality video. Makes me want to visit Japan!

Here is an example of DivX™ streaming in HD 1080p. You'll need broadband for sure. (Gorgeous!)

While we always consider the ideas of our members (it's how we get better every year
), don't forget that the YouTube/GoogleVideo embed tags allow you to embed an existing streaming video into a topic.

A DivX embed tag would still require source video, something we would have to host, or form partnerships with other hosts to obtain material.

At the moment, YouTube and Google Video are absolutely huge and of such common usage which is why the feature was implemented especially.

YouTube is moving all of its videos to H.264 for high quality display on the Apple TV, so it will be getting better anyway.

In the event that a high quality vid is needed, you can still link to it the usual way without the embedding

There is a Firefox Add-on that I have that allows you to copy and save these files, such as ifilm and YouTube and all that. I don't remember what it's called, but if you find it, it might satisfy your need

Edit: I see that you're looking to EMBED the files. Sorry, thought I might be able to actually help someone for once

I guess I don't see the problem here. Anyone can post their high-quality video on Stage6™. Hosting solved.

The video can then be embedded in our forums the same way we do currently with YouTube™ and Google™.

There is no need to form a partnership or alliance with Stage6™/DivX™.

Ok, cool. However, Stage6™/DivX™ is available now, and it can stream in 1080p.

Of course we can. But wouldn't the embeded player be nicer? We could still link out to YouTube™ and Google™ too before we decided it would be cool to embed them. Adding the embed tags would be pretty easy, so why not do it?

While there are other solutions to the need for high-quality such as iFilm, the DivX™ codec is by far the most popular high-quality MPEG-4 codec available. I wouldn't be opposed to adding the iFilm embed tags either. I mean hey, we got two low-quality video tags (YouTube/Google), why not have two options for high quality video? (DivX/iFilm)

I'm really surprised at the apparent lack of community interest in this topic. Is everyone really satisfied with picking apart YouTube UFO videos and Google vids of the trade towers falling? 320x240 resolution kinda sucks for that. HD rez with little loss would be pretty sweet though for those kinds of videos.

C'mon ATS! Why is there so little interest in this? Surely there are those of you that would like to chime in with your reasons for/against this idea!?

You can post links to whatever DivX content you want right now, just as a regular link.

I'm sure if the use of a particular DivX hosting site becomes so widespread here, SO will implement a way to embed if possible, but right now I bet he has a lot more important things on his plate.

I don't really see the problem here nor understand why you are pressing this so hard....

I definately see the point. Stage6 and the DivX web player put billion-dollar projects like Google Video and Youtube to a shame in terms of bandwith, video quality and functionality. If you think about it, since the advent of such easy video sites like the latter two very many threads are based on crappy videos of theirs, and it is a nuisance to watch 80%+ of them.

I´m quite sure that this system will take a big share out of the crappy Flashplayer business in the future, so ATS could again be on the technological forefront with an embed option

AboveTopSecret.com has had a long history of copyright respect, displayed through our terms and conditions, guidelines for including external content, podcasting guidelines, copy-and-paste restrictions, and a host of other operational nuances. These policies will continue to be supported and respected by the newly formed parent entity, The Above Network, LLC. Enabling the embedding of a high-definition format with no restrictions on copyright and usage is not compatible with our history of respecting the origins and creators of off-site content.

However... that being said...

We are currently in development and testing of a dedicated video hosting service for our members. The preliminary test is viewable here:
www.abovetopsecret.com...
And a more extensive test is coming soon.

The long term goals for this ATS video product do not include higher-quality DivX format, as the player will be Flash-based to prevent casual download of intellectual property. But, the plans DO include offering two versions of all videos... one very high-quality for logged-in members, and one lower-quality (similar to YouTube compression) for guests. Also, the video content will be hosted on a high-capacity distributed media hosting service for high availability.

The content of our video service is still under development... but suffice to say we are seeking out quality material, and more info is coming soon.
