Can anyone point me to a video on youtube that explains the universe in fairly simple terms.Like the number of stars, number of galaxies, with pics of galaxies and the like.

I've been searching for hours and can't find a suitable one. There's this old guy at work who's really interested in learning about it but when I give him the numbers and draw him pictures of galaxies his eyes sort of glaze over as if he doesn't follow.

He's under the impression that our sun is the only one,the rest of the stars are chunks that flew off it,if something happens to our sun the universe will end, that type of thing.

He's a cool guy and I'd like to show him what's out there.

Wow
Sounds like he does need some insight. I don't know if you've seen these videos or if they help you or not but here they are.

Here's one that shows just how small we are as a planet.

Hope this helps you some.

I've never really learnt about our universe through watching videos. The best way is always to research a little. I've mostly learnt all by myself through interest. But here's a pretty good video, it doesn't teach you much, but it's interesting nonetheless^^

Thanks guys.I'm gonna go with a book so he can take it in in his own time, check out the pics, see the numbers etc. It's sad that most older folks don't know this stuff.

I wouldn't go quite that far. I would think very few "older" folks don't know this stuff...I bet there are more teenagers out there today that don't know this "stuff".

Sad, but true

Aylyan, may your avatar munch on your genitals for all eternity as punishment for saying that about we elder folk.

And does this guy live near the headwaters of the Amazon?

Personally, I think he's just having you on, or he has sever mental problems.

I agree with you there. I work in an area where it is common for senior citizens to be nuclear physicists and have degrees in fields of science and engineering. They are deep thinkers. It's in stark contrast to the youth that I've seen today who seem oblivious to what lies outside of this world. Not saying all of them are...

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. It's usually the older people who have more experience, hence making them more informed about space. I'm only 16 though, so I'm one of the few teenagers who know quite a bit about our universe. I've learnt it all by myself through interest. So practically anyone can learn a lot about it, all you need is the will.

Hehe,I did say most,not all.

The guy left school at 15 and was in the navy for 30 years till he joined our company. He doesn't bull# and I could tell he believed what he was saying.I think you'd be surprised at the number of pensioners who think our solar system = the universe.

It's funny a lot of people don't know this kind of information, whether or not it's because they just don't care about i will never know but it's always created a sense of awe in me, anyway to the point two very good mates of mine were round one night just having a few beers and a chat really, and one of them said 'it's weird to think that were the only life in the universe isnt it' i just about had a hearth attack and went on to explain that all the stars in the sky are other suns just like our own a lot of them a lot older than ours and many which have planets orbiting them, he didn't beleive me funnily enough and i actually had to prove it to him!.

How did you "prove" it to him and why did he still deny it? My suggestion next time is to not discuss the universe over brew.

Heh..how did he prove it to him?Looking through telescopes for 2000 years?

Why did he still deny it?Because he was a typical human?

Lots of the best discussions are had over a brew or two, lets the normal folks express their natural curiosity.
