MUSCAT, Oman -- Oman evacuated tens of thousands Wednesday and closed the major port of Sohar as a weakening Cyclone Gonu roared toward the Strait of Hormuz _ the world's major transport artery for Persian Gulf oil.

As heavy rains lashed coastal areas, authorities closed all operations at the port of Sohar and evacuated the 11,000 workers, port spokesman Dirk Jan De Vink said.

A powerful cyclone is passing near the Gulf state of Oman, bringing heavy rains to the capital, Muscat.

Tropical Cyclone Gonu is continuing north-west towards Iran but wind speeds have dropped to about 100mph (175 km/h).

Thousands of residents were evacuated from Oman's coast and the offshore island of Masirah. Hundreds have also been evacuated from the Iranian coast.

The storm is the most powerful in the region for 60 years.

The US military predicted that Gonu would become a "very weak" tropical cyclone over the next 48-72 hours.

reports are that it is dying down, hwever people on the scene are saying different.
At 1.00pm Wednesday 6 June 2007 the tide was surging powerfully onto the Fujairah beach.

The waves were much higher than at seven this morning.

The established breakwaters are being breached in places as well as the first row of the beach barricades that were constructed yesterday.

Residents from homes on the beach were standing on the balconies willing the cyclone to alter its course.
