In an all out survival situation, you do what you need to do to survive Period.

Dog food is just that food. Its best use would be as a suppliment to your food supply. Lets face it if you can find the stuff you should be able to find other things as well.

Wet versus dry? I would have to see what the relative life of each would be. It stands to reason the dry would last longer and some dry dog food is made to add water too.

thats what i am talking about...an asteroid hit and it is gonna be post apocolyptic for ever....by two weeks in i will be eating people dude.

for real.

what about baby food? i buy little 8oz jars for around 70 cent. I realize the portions are small, but I do think that you could survive off of them, if necessary.

They are obviously manufactured for human consumption and contain plenty of nutrients.

just a thought, cause although i would definitely die of starvation before eating another human being or even a canine (such lovable creatures), insects and grass would be an option for me.

of course, i'd rather my baby survive with at least one of his parents, than to let him starve for the lives of both.

Dry dog food is expensive and will get ants. I know you don't have your tupperware collection handy in a dog food eating scenario.

Canned food is the way to go, just don't eat from cans that are buldging, they have botulism.

The best thing to do is lay that dog food out as bait for actual animals to come by and eat. Then you kill and eat them.

Also, don't store anything in clear containers. You need to block out as much light as possible. A vacuum sealer and a small generator that ran on sun/human power would be very handy.

Avoid anything that could potentially give you diarrhea, as it will cause dehydration very quickly.

One could most definitely live off of dog food alone for a good period of time. Thousands of pets have eaten thousands of pounds of food over collective thousands of years.

Dogs are mammals. They have the same basic organs and functions that we have.

No reason a person couldn't survive off of dog food for an indefinite amount of time.

There is a reason its so cheap.

If you were buying your dog food in the 100 dollar a bag range (50lb) then it would be far superior as an emergency food. Iams/pedigree/purina They are all garbage and full of things you dont want to be putting inside your dog let alone inside yourself.

Yarcofin
Two words:

Animal By-products.

You could eat it if you had to, but you don't want to know what it's made of. And it is also nutritionally formulated for dogs, not humans, so it isn't that good for long-term consumption.

It's no different than bologna or hot dogs.

I would say soak the dry food first to soften it and expand it and then you should avoid any problems digesting it or causing yourself a pain in the rear.

Soften in water and eat. It would be filling, mostly nutritious & almost tasty.

As bad as you think it tastes, it beats starving!
