U.S. fires at al Qaeda target in Somalia

(CNN) -- A U.S. Navy destroyer off the coast of northern Somalia Friday fired on a suspected al Qaeda operative believed to have been involved in the 1998 attacks on U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, sources confirmed to CNN.

This story broke on CNN around 5 pm C.T. surprisingly there has been little coverage on this event, my guess being that since we dropped bombs on Somalia a 2-3 weeks ago it is not a new story.

It is surprising however that the Navy chose to use 5 inch guns to take out something the size of a normal vehicle, as this sort of round is typically used for something much larger and one would think we would use laser guided or other precision targeting systems to minimize the risk of civilian casualties.
