A capacitor isn't a load at all, on DC it will charge up until the Voltage = the supply voltage ( milli seconds ) then no current will flow. It is seen on DC as an open circuit after the initial charging current stops when the voltage across it has matched the supply voltage supplied to it.

Yeah, that's how i explained it the first time, at the top of page 3 of this thread, but he just kept repeating the same thing over and over again..

I know there is no current flow through the capacitor... I used the wrong word.

It's just that StellarX was using this circuit to proove energy transfer through empty space, saying that since current can't flow through the capacitor, the lamp shouldn't flash.

It's true, that the lamp can't glow constantly, but the reason it briefly flashes, is BECAUSE of the current flow TO the capacitor, while it's charging.

Did you look at that paper by that physics proffesor? Since you have more electronics experience than me, i was hoping you could make sense of it perhaps.

Why is he using a capacitor charging through a light bulb as proof of energy transfer through empty space?

P.S. Thanks for the correction!

The capacitor example is only proof of energy transfer to a storage device, or more precisely the motion of charge carriers driven by an emf, and the principles of that are well known.

The transformer example does achieve transfer of energy through space but the principle demonstrated there is that of electromagnetic coupling which is well understood also.

Anyone ever built a crystal radio? There's an nice example of long distance wireless transmission of electrical energy through open space (well open air at least).

Wow, this thread is still active

I cannot stand the ignorance or the poverty any more! I got financing and in March I start school to pursue an Associates Degree in Electronic Engineering.

I saw some great stuff posted.
Must sleep now though, will read it all later.

I hate working the night shift

Hey congratulations on your decision and financing !! I hope you will find time to contribute here on ATS with your soon to be found knowledge.

congratulations.

to succeed you must give up any hope of a social life, cease to drink alcohol, cease to smoke - anything! and restrict your interaction with members of the opposite sex. I write this as a man who engaged in most of these things whilst at university - and struggled!

I have seen the effect mentioned on this thread, but not the reson behind it...

electrons don't travel that quick... electrons in a material have drift velocity, dependant on their excitation my a magnetic field. which can be derived (see wikipedia en.wikipedia.org... )

the other thing i remembered that might be of use at some point is that I=nAve where I is current, n is the number of electrons in a metre cube of material, A is the crossectional area of the conductor, v is the drift velocity of the electron and e is the charge on a single electron (1.6E-19 coulomb)

this equation will be your friend.
