Hancock Father Sues

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The father of Josh Hancock filed suit Thursday, claiming a restaurant provided drinks to the St. Louis Cardinals relief pitcher even though he was intoxicated prior to the crash that killed him.

The suit, filed in St. Louis Circuit Court by Dean Hancock of Tupelo, Miss., does not specify damages. Mike Shannon's Restaurant, owned by the longtime Cardinals broadcaster who starred on three World Series teams in the 1960s, is a defendant in the case along with Shannon's daughter, Patricia Shannon Van Matre, the restaurant manager.

This is sickening.
I understand the pain and grief, but this family seems to want to blame everyone for Josh Hancock's death, BUT him.
Let us be reminded, he was twice the legal alchohol level, speeding, not seat buckled, and to round up all of that, he was talking on a cell phone.
There has to be some level of personal responsibility. At any point, Josh could have done something to be proactive about his own safty, starting with calling a cab.
This just sends a message out, I was just too stupid to live, YOU all should have kept me alive.
Darwin award recipient?

This country is rife with lawsuits for people who want to blame someone other than the person who really is responsible for their own bad actions.

The fat kids suing McDonald's for making them fat, et al. It's disgusting.

He was an adult. It was HIS responsibility to monitor his own behavior. If he wasn't capable of drinking responsibly, he should have stayed home. How was it the bar's fault? They sell alcohol, that's the business they're in, it's not up to them to police legal adults -- though throwing someone out of the bar for being belligerent and obnoxious is something they should do.

I am tired of the mentality of "Oh, something bad happened to me (or a family member) because of my own stupid actions, so somebody has to pay!"

Grow up already. He's dead. Spend the energies on promoting anti-DUI messages instead of wasting the taxpayer's money on a trial, and a judge's valuable time on an unfortunate and totally preventable event. All that had to be done was to NOT DRIVE.
