Hi,

On the way back from cycling over from my friends house after coming back from my birthday celebrations I caught sight of a large orange light in the sky. At first I thought it was a plane even though there were no discernable flashing lights coming from it, but the way it was moving was odd. Initially it came over quite fast then seemed to slow down to a crawl and stop. It then appeared to start gaining altitude (getting smaller, moving upward) whilst moving in a slow clockwise movement until it reached about 45 degrees around, and then it stopped and continued climbing. Soon it was getting hard to see the thing, and by estimates of where I originally saw it and where it was going out of view id say it was at least getting into the 60-70,000ft ranges (cant be 100% on that) and kept climbing.

Now, all of this wouldnt be that strange as there are some aircraft that can reach those altitudes, even though it would be pushing it going vertical most of the way. However, before the other light completed faded from view another large orange light came into view along the exact same path of the previous. It was moving quite fast initially and slowed down to a stop again, but this time, instead of moving around in a clockwise motion, it started gaining altitude until it disappeared (lost concentration on it for a bit).

Its certainly the strangest display of things in the sky I have ever seen. The initial size of the light was bigger than that of other aircraft flying around in the sky at the time, and on the other aircraft I could easily see the standard flashing lights. After talking to my housemate (he got a partial glimpse too), he thinks that it may be an object that was in our solar system, but moving away from earth... Hes a good bloke, but I find that hard to believe; if those objects were in space they would have to be huge to be seen from the ground.

Anyway, I like to keep my mind open to most things, but I really would be interested in finding out what they were. Its my first sighting of something that I could not identify... Any ideas?

I don't really know much about the lights in the sky,
but I saw nobody had posted to you, so I felt I should.

Happy birthday.

Maybe someone was setting off those chinese lanterns that have been doing the rounds across the UK recently...?

This is a possibility... Two could have been let off and got caught in the same wind pushing it sideways at speed, then exited allowing it to drift off into nothing. Those things sure can go high though if it is the case and are certainly bright as they made passing aircraft seem insignificant. If I see one of them again, ill try to have a camera so I can take a picture if possible.

There was a sighting of bright orange lights in Bangor Northern Ireland recently that made the headlines locally . The lights looked quite amazing and were travelling in odd directions.

The BBC team came up with the chineese lantern theory after a few shops had phoned their newsroom saying they had just recieved a new stock of them and had sold a lot of them in the past few weeks to teenagers.

Im always quite suspicious now when i hear about multiple orangey lights in the sky. Although they do create a great visual effect in the night time sky and are worth watching.
