Does this mean any kid under the age of 18 can be dropped off?

That is a good one

This is a good idea although not a new one. Sometimes people are ashamed for whatever the reason that they can't handle a baby or that they made a mistake. Although how anyone can consider a baby a mistake is beyond me. This is a much better alternative then abandoning the little one on a park bench or in a garbage can. I hope and pray that people actually use this alternative.

I think its sick that parents just drop off their children like trash. They could at least put them up for adoption.

The point is anonymity, and that's what happens to the babies as it is.

Although I'm not too in favor of people having kids and then abandoning them, I'm glad that at least there's a place for these kids to go. Better than the bathroom of a Taco Bell.

But as a side note, I'd heard that it's illegal to have a condom in Japan. Perhaps this would partially explain the abandoned baby issue?

No, condoms are'nt illegal in Japan.

Japan's one of the most sexually liberal (though it does'nt always look that way) country on the planet.

I've never heard that before.

Condoms are about as common as sushi in Japan. Japan is an absolute porn fest, with hundreds / thousands of "Love Hotels" so you can get it on!

I don't really think that is an issue with the Japanese people, sure you can have an accident. Here just googled and found this.

Out-of-wedlock babies are still rare in Japan in general, and personally, I would like to praise the courage of both parents to make such an untraditional decision. Among recent out-of-wedlock scandals, Kabuki actor Ebizo Ichikawa's secret daughter was revealed in 2003, and another Kabuki actor Somegoro Ichikawa also fathered a child when he was 18.

Sometimes bad things happen to good people. I hope this new system for the Japanese can help those people. Also I read on the BBC report of this that it is a cathlic hospital and therefore anti abortion and that is a part of the whole concept.

"Safe Haven" laws have been passed in most states in the US......some states even allow that the child just has to be handed to a police officer or doctor.

Some states do limit the age, so that newborns are brought in as soon after birth as possible. The hope being that the infants aren't hidden, delaying the proper care til it's too late. ( So much for getting rid of one in the terrible twos!! Ha!)

Texas, in 1999, became the first state to enact a "safe haven" law which permits a person -- usually a parent -- to abandon a newborn baby at a specified location. This may be a hospital, firehouse, or police station. By 2003-MAR-11, 42 states had such laws. This increased to 47 states by the end of 2006.
