hmm dunno if this a clue but 1 guy is missing part of his head during the switch... thats my guess as why it turns to 13?

Follow the feet...you'll see that the 3rd guy in the second column, is the one who goes bye bye...

Seems to be done by a reverse composite... together, two non-person images make a person, apart, they are parts of two different people. The two become one, eliminating one of the people. Cool optical trick...
