I really don't think it's prevalent condition such blatantly bad posts using 'sms texting'.

I know my example was greatly exaggerated. However, surely if people are allowed to throw in 'u' and 'r' or numbers in place of words '2' '4', then if you allow people to do that, then you would be allowing people to go the whole hog and just type like they were living in the ghetto. This is not a 'class' thing, I know I used the term 'ghetto', but all that means is basically, kids who think it's cool to talk without pronouncing their words correctly, and then perhaps continuing to do so when writing.

I think it's important to cut the poor grammar out. We're all here to learn aren't we? Do I need to be reading posts where there are numbers in place of words?

''I went 2 the shops, 2 get some bread 4 my mum''.

You wouldn't write it in an essay. Why get away with writing it on a forum that is specifically here to expand our minds?

Please dont use the word ghetto please b/c thats not what ghetto means. And if its not a class thing then there is no need to use the word (i dont mean to sound like i'm jumping on you but it really bothers me when people use that word when its not needed). In all reality its just a quick (and lazy) way to get your point across why spell out the whole word if you dont have to is the mentality. An occasional u is not going to stop your world from going around is it? I mean i dont really do it but I'm just going to type the way I type. (I dont think i have really used textspeak since i have been here...) and if i get warned...I mean I think there are bigger issues on this board...such as eople writing a page full of correct grammer and big words only to find that you have just wasted your time on nonsense but that's me.

I don't know any other way to describe people who sound or write like 'dis' 'dat' 'der' 'fink' 'fort'.

Ghetto describes it perfectly.

What's b/c? Are you that lazy you can't type out because?

I think that shows laziness, especially since we're on the whole topic of shortening words uneccesarily.

Ghetto talk is the result of having juveniles on the board. Young people should be actively discouraged from entering boards with serious discussions because apart from their incessant prattle and banal commentary they can add other pollutants into the mix such as this ghetto-speak and poor spelling making it a throughly distasteful and low-brow experience.

I don't see it has bad just quicker. I use 'OP' all the time. It is just faster than typing out Original Poster when I am referring to them in a thread.

Yes, thats right, because young people dont deserve intelligent dicussion, they deserve to be left out of the loop and discouraged from looking into new ideas or breaking away from old habbits, yes, thats the smartest thing to do.

Because young people arent intelligent. Bringing them into an intelligent conversation only decreases the intelligence of the conversation. When they develop this said intelligence they should try to enter meaningful discussion.

Its been my experience that Intelligence knows no age boundries. Funny ignorace shows no age discrimination as well

Signs Of Intelligent Life

Intelligent discussion is possible for anyone, regardless of age. All that is required is a commitment to do so.

On ATS there are many children who post like adults. There are also many adults who post like children.

I would hate to even try to figure out which members are which.

An Assault On "Free Speach"?

Meanwhile, the propensity for some people to deliberately go out of their way to misinterpret ATS policies and make a big deal out of doing so never ceases to amaze me.

We reserve the right to edit or remove posts that we feel are not appropriate for ATS. That can include posts in TXT, leet, pig latin or whatever.

That's nothing new or unprecedented, just a continuation of a philosophy that has helped keep ATS above the level of the average gaming forum, bathroom wall or Youtube video commentary.

Anyone who dislikes a higher quality of discussion is welcome to post anywhere else on the Internet with my blessing.

That is about as INCONSISTENT with the goals of ATS as I can imagine ANYTHING being.

By your beliefs and by the intelligence of your post, then I'd say that you are about the youngest person posting on this thread...

Wow.
At what age group are you referring to when you mean young people?
BTW your statement just proved that some adults also do dont know how to engage in an intelligent conversation.

I must say while it can be discouraging to read some posts, not just concerning whatever special speak they're posted in, but moreover the ignorant sometimes fascist views they express, they often turns out to be written by elder possbly disgrunted members.

On the other hand (OTOH) I often find myself amazed about the insight and serenity, not to mention the sound logic young people can show in a topic. A fresh and unbiased view older members not often are able to produce or express.

Because let's face it, among the hardcore CTs you seldom will be able to gain much interests, they know it all and when you're past 30 petrification has started and it is only in rare cases reversible.

Opposite I have often seen young people show genuine enthusiasm by information that is new to them. When you are the provider of that info-bit, and you see it could start off the recipant on a new path in their search, then to me it is it all worth.

So please don't barre young peoples access to this board.

I think those who cannot find and fall into a style "academic" enough to be acceptable eventually will leave.

The acronyms have been a greater problem to me than any occasional 'u', 'r', '2' or '4'. But I guess acronyms are cool and 'intellectual' where shorthand speak are just 'ghetto'.

If you wanna give a hand to non-English speaking members writting in the English language, you go easy on those acronyms. Often thet don't enhance the understanding.

I haven't been here, for what feels like awhile, and upon my return I find threads about how to post.

- guess no one has solved the world mysteries so we have to chat about something.

There is a wonderful feature called ignore, I wonder why that isn't sufficient enough?
For those who dont care they will either skip it or read it...if its that bothering, think about this...do you want to read the post from that person anyway - regardless of how they typed it? So might as well hit ignore, not fret about the small stuff.

I have NEVER seen ANY young person contribute ANYTHING of value to me here on ATS, EVER. Most are wikipedia read and google taught. THAT is NOT intelligence.

Hmmmmm. I will repeat once again. Its been my experience that intelligence is not always a function of age. Life long wisdom is a function OF experience, age, and intelligence. Ignorance and hate however do not discriminate and both young and old (and those in between) can easily fall prey.

Having been on ATS for a bit, I have seen fantastic posts by those who cannot even drive and ignorant, misinformed posts from those old enough to be collecting Social Security.

I will leave you with one of my all time favorites by Crosby Stills Nash & Young

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good bye.

Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you'll know by.

Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.

Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picked, the one you'll know by.

Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

Questionable Credentials

And this is?

I'm not seeing anything intelligent whatsoever about this line of commentary, so I hope you can appreciate the irony.

I'm curious as to how you would know the ages of other members, since we do not ask for them, members are not required to disclose them and no means are provided to verify the ages of members even if they claim to disclose them.

Am I missing something important here?

Now don't be hatin'.

As a 'fairly old guy', I can honestly say that this is untrue. The fact is that there are a large number of 'young persons' within the membership AND on the staff who are quite capable of expressing themselves, doing good research and contributing with excellent posts.

There are intelligent AND ignorant young people and the same applies for 'old farts' like me.

Intelligence is something that is not acquired through age, you either have it or you don't, regardless.

I won't name names, but the member whom I would consider to be the "most" intelligent and contributing member, is actually quite young. Initially I pegged them in their forties, wife, 2.3 kids, dog, white picket fence, etc. Here, he is in his teens.

Nobody here is forced to openly disclose their age, so I fail to see how you can possibly make this stand.

Quite the blanket statement you've laid here.

Show me a soul that equates intelligence to age, and I'll show you a misguided one.

Age is nothing more than a number, and I know plenty of children that would put plenty of adults to shame.

Hell, I watch that "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader" from time to time, and I tell you.. those little buggers are smart. ATS could use one or two of those young ones.
