“We were just trying to avoid catch phrases.”

The House Armed Services Committee has decided the phrase "War on Terror" has to go. Their solution? New phrases like “ongoing military operations throughout the world.”

Committee staff members are told in the memo to use specific references to specific operations instead of the Bush administration’s catch phrases. The memo, written by Staff Director Erin Conaton, provides examples of acceptable phrases, such as “the war in Iraq,” the “war in Afghanistan, “operations in the Horn of Africa” or “ongoing military operations throughout the world.”

The American Imperialism argument basically goes without saying, and new 'anti-catch phrases' like this mirror the reality of our imperialist system, however most "American Imperialism Deniers" will continue to deny that this most glaring truth: that we're the worlds hegemonic imperialist state.

The Deniers view seems to hold that examples like Iraq are flukes, benevolent, and just. To maintain this view you must maintain that this is the case with all of the ongoing wars. Take Bosnia / Kosovo in the 90's for example. Even Clinton has the blood of innocents on his hands.

I hate to see Congress playing word games, but there is a need to be specific about the various operations which the war on terrorism comprises.

We should know by now that it is dangerous to reify concepts and wage wars on drugs, poverty, and terrorism, when in fact we are waging war on drug abusers, drug dealers, terrorists, and, well, I never have figured out the poverty thing, it's such a relative concept.

At any rate, I disagree with your assessment of the situation, while agreeing that word games are a waste of resources.

So I take it they finally caught on to the fact that the "War on Terror" is basically fighting a ghost. There's no real target/enemy.

I think, IMO, those in Congress that support this renaming of an ongoing fight against an invisible enemy are desperately searching for a means to get Bushy to back down from his warmongering. I could be wrong, and probably am. I know, I know... that's just me grasping for straws to think there's good left in someone.

The fact that we're currently a "permanent war economy" should raise red flags, but it usually doesn't occur to most people. This goes hand in hand with the American Empire concept that has to be the most overlooked truth about this nation by its inhabitants. Well it doesn't stop with US being a "super" empire, nor with it being a "war economy" nor the fact that weapons are our primary export but it goes even deeper to the point that the financial system itself is imperialistic and requires control of other nations resources and economies to even survive. Because there isn't any gold backing the Dollar (worthless), its survival depends on the entire world taking it in trade of valuable things and it is accepted for this worldwide for the most part. Furthermore, it's even used as the primary currency, in many nations, despite it being worthless (a historical first / phenomenon).

Please allow Congressman Ron Paul (who may be running for US President on 2008) to teach you the full history and the potential catastrophic dangers of this unprecedented (broken) financial system, from the floor of Congress.

We're a system addicted to war in what could be said as every way possible. Even the monetary system is addicted to imperialism. Being the engine of 'AI', it helps drive the imperial military war machine to conquest. It's the face of the system of global economic imperialism. And this is only one aspect. It's deniable, but not refutable.

The "War on Terror" was just a blanket name for hyper-imperialism involving economic, political, militaristic and covert means for total influence and cocersive control where needed.
