I just happened to stumble across this neat, little flash video about Facebook earlier this afternoon and thought that it needed to be shared with the masses.

albumoftheday.com...

The reason why I found the video so interesting, is because I reside in Toronto, Ontario Canada... THE FACEBOOK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD:
buzzcanuck.typepad.com...

It's funny.. I was just chatting with a graphic designer buddy the other day about Facebook and he was mentioning that we had the largest Facebook user group (Toronto) in the world.... that's when I did some searching and found the above stats/information.

Today, while searching for more stats... I found the flash video. Interesting how DARPA is even included in the mix.

anyhow, just wanted to share.

I think everyone knows there is no privacy with those sites.

In fact, thats the whole point, to have no privacy. That's why millions of people sign up for sites like that and reveal everything about themselves for anyone in the world to see.

Teachers from the universities can read anything anyone says. Sometimes posting pictures of illegal activity will get you caught through facebook.

Posting pictures of illegal activity should get you caught ANYWHERE. People who post everything about themselves are asking for trouble IMO.

Exactly. I have a myspace, never use it though. But i dont have my real name on my profile info. And the email i use to register isn't my main email i use.Its my "joke" email. I just think its funny how people put all this info about themselves online, and are surprised when their boss, school, etc finds out what they've been doing.

I will bite my tongue and refrain from sharing my full feelings concerning such sites [ facebook , myspace , frenids reunited etc ]

BUT : it is now standard practice in the UK recruitment market for interviewers to download the applicants profile from friend reunited

and check firt the CV of applicants , and then use the info as basis for interview questions

a mate of mine is a sub dept head @ a major UK blue chip company - and so sits on the interview board for vacancies to his dept

and he tells me that

" major errors of fact " - if the CV info does not match the online profile - it goes in the bin , it may be " only "a typo - but according to him - " we work to 0.005mm tolerances where a mistake can cost £5k / error , we need people who are precise - not sloppy "

" alarming behaviour " - even such innocent behaviour as an " extreme sport " can tip the balance when it gets to the second interview - for the simple reason that if two candidates are otherwise equally quallified - the " safe option " will be prefered - as they believe that a stamp collector is less likley to have sick leave for ` self inlicted injury ` than say a mountaineer

" honesty and integrity " - any admission of drug taking , criminality , even marital infidelity can dependant on the seriousness lead to summary rejection .

there you have it - the straight hearsay from a freiund of the horse

Just in case anyone is wondering...

What happens on ATS...

... stays on ATS.

And it will always be that way. We do, and will not share any data beyond traffic reports, which never include IP's.

Well I hope anyone who's watching my friends on facebook enjoys all the photos of the pretty dance dresses and last week's Grey's Anatomy episode, because that's all that ever goes on.

Although I can say that the university I attend (the sports teams, clubs, etc) has strict rules about what can & can't go on facebook. That's not to say that everyone follows them, but there's roughly an article a week in the newspaper about how bad it is.

If you don't want to get caught then don't post it. It's just that simple.

I use facebook for image hosting since it's relatively simple to upload tons of pictures in a short amount of time. Maybe I should start to turn to another hosting option..

I don't really find this too surprising - who wouldn't take to chance to capitalize on such easily given personal information?

i use facebook and myspace, and i have to say- its obvious that whatever you put on there is fair game for anyone who wants to have a look. maybe there should be a warning to people (i know some of my friends were under the impression that only their approved friends could possibly see what they have written..) but it doesnt take a lot of intelligence to realise- if you dont want anyone to know, don't tell anyone. least of all your computer. i dont think many people would be interested in the photos of my friends, or the random quizzes about what i had for breakfast, so i dont feel too worried about using facebook.

unfortunately, most community websites are like this. this video was actually really creepy, i have a facebook and i'm reconsidering it.

they can use our information for anything they want JUST by us clicking a little box.

While it is expected that third parties, such as businesses, try to buy out facebook information. I am completely freaked out that the owner is selling this information to what ultimately leads to DARPA, the Department of Defense, and the Central Intelligence Agency. I can not say that this is not expected, but one would hope that this would never happen. The question then becomes how would people such as James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, or even James C. Calhoun feel about their America, which they poured their hearts over establishing and molding, feel about such a blatent disregard for the publics privacy.

I hate to tell you, but pretty much every data mining operation that I am aware of uses these sites as at least one source of "relationship graphs".

There are several types of data mining, but one real popular one is the sort where they try to link you up with the people you appear to know - which makes spidering these sites an obvious starting point.

Hmm, for some reason I never thought about an employer getting on my myspace...

I think I might shred a few things from it... If not dump it..

And having discretion is all well and good, but you can always have stupid friends mentioning things that are best left unsaid.
