bbc news are have said that a city has been found that has been destroyed by the sea on the cost of crete.

They are not saying that a city has been found. Its just the most common theory of Atlantis, that it refers to the Minoans being undone by the eruption of Thera (and the ensuing tsunami that washed over Crete). Unless they've actually found what Plato described as the capital, they've found nothing new.
