Drug-resistant Gonorrhea Spreads in US

WASHINGTON - Drug-resistant gonorrhea is spreading across the United States and new treatments are needed to combat the sexually transmitted disease, the federally run Centers for Disease Control said Friday.

The CDC is so alarmed at the spike in cases of gonorrhea, one of the most common STDs in America, that it is no longer recommending doctors treat it with kind of antibiotics typically prescribed in the past, it said in a statement.

The warning came after a study showed that the number of gonorrhea cases in men rose dramatically in 26 US cities between 2001 and 2006.

I wonder what can cause a certain disease such as this one to become drug resistant.

I am no medical expert so hopefully, can get some opinion from some members.

People tend to stop taking thier meds once they feel better. This allows the most drug resistant of the bacteria to proagate thus increasing thier resistance. The inital incarnation of penicillin is just such a case. Its all but useless for many diseases it once was able to kill quickly.

Also, the safe sex attitude has gone by the wayside as AIDS has moved from a sure death to a somewhat manageable disease and people seem to fear it less.
