VR controller for PS3

Sony's getting desperate to goose the popularity of its slow-selling PS3, digging deep into its idea basket to catch up to the popularity of the Nintendo Wii. Apparently the company's plan of attack is to develop a VR/3-D controller, illustrated in this patent application for a "handheld computer interactive device" spotted today.

It takes the abilities of the Wii controller a step further, where in addition to determining where your hand is in 3D space, sensors in the glove can be triggered by individual fingers, letting you grasp objects or assign each finger to a different function. Added to that is tactile feedback.

Seeing the overwhelming success of the Wii, Sony has decided to try and counter their success with a Virtual Reality type controller for 3D games. Seeing that the PS3 will never really equate to the Wii by any standards, Sony does have a superb idea for giving their users an experience similar to the Wii, and maybe even a bit better as well.

Although this is only a patent, it might be a prelude to where Sony is trying to take their overall user experience. 3D games with tactile feedback?

These types of technology only reinforce where the future of gaming is headed.

Any thoughts? Good/Bad?

Does no one think that this seems like an obvious rip-off on the coolness of the Nintendo Wii?

Sony knows that it is losing the battle between the PS3 and the Wii, and this is there attempt to draw back some of the alienated users to their system.

Succeed or fail?

BTW, The Whole VR Helmet Will Only Make Game Dev. Harder. I Mean, Consider This. Sony's Dedicated Game Devs Are STILL Having Trouble Making Games (This Goes For The Wii As Well.) Now, Let's Add In The VR Helmet. Devs Are Gonna Want To Be Up To Standards With Gaming, And This VR Helmet Will Only Make It More Painful.
