The press conference is just over as seen on CNN. The main points brought out by the members of the crew:
They said that they were operating from HMS Cornwall, and boarded and secured a merchant ship for a search op, according to the UN mandate. They said
they had a GPS backup for navigation, and in contact with HMS Cornwall at all times.
They insist they were inside Iraqi territorial waters, 1.7 nm from Iranian territory. As they were returning, they saw two Iranian speed boats
approach. When they were 400 meters away they got their weapons on the ready. However, the Iranians came in with their speed boats armed with RPGs and
heavy machine guns and rammed their boat and blocked them in, which amounted to aggressive action on their part.
To avoid a major fight if they resisted, the Britishers allowed the Iranians to remove their weapons. Blindfolded, they were sent to an unknown
location and subjected to interrogation with hands bound and forced against a wall.
They were kept in isolation in stone cells. They forced them to admit that they had strayed into Iranian waters if they wanted to be released
otherwise they would be imprisoned for 7 years.
However, the general consensus was that they were generally treated well, though subjected to intense psychological pressure.
So that's the gist of the press conference where it was clearly brought out by the Britishers that they were well within Iraqi and NOT Iranian
waters.
But will we ever get to know the truth?
