Murder-suicide on UW Campus - What good is a restaining order?

The woman shot dead on the campus of the University of Washington this morning had a restraining order against the man who shot her and then himself in what police are saying was an apparent murder-suicide.

What good does a restraining order or a protection order do? Unless they are written on Kevlar and worn under a shirt, they protect nothing. How do we get the agreesor off the street while still protecting their right to due process?

Man, these things aren't perfect, but then again they can't be. They're only intended to stop sane people from stalking. If they had known this guy was suicidal/homicidal, he should have been under observation.

It sucks doesnt it?
But, what more can you do?

This is the problem with the legal system, but at the same time its the good things about it.

Sure, the restraining order probably had good merrit, but.. you cant go and lock the guy up, or force either of them to move away from each other.

But at the same time, if they've got a death wish theres really no stopping them.

The mental capacity of the murderer probably wasnt very sound, and thus should of been picked up in a psych test.

But again, even they are so regulated and tied the system failed agian!

The thing is, the day you take out the restraining order, you go buy a gun.

Then when you have to shoot the disagreeable fellow, you have the restraining order to point to as proof of self-defense.
