Social Networking and the Pentagon

New Scientist has discovered that Pentagon's National Security Agency, which specialises in eavesdropping and code-breaking, is funding research into the mass harvesting of the information that people post about themselves on social networks. And it could harness advances in internet technology - specifically the forthcoming "semantic web" championed by the web standards organisation W3C - to combine data from social networking websites with details such as banking, retail and property records, allowing the NSA to build extensive, all-embracing personal profiles of individuals.

Is it just me, or is there anyone else here who's a little aprehensive of the new social networking feature here on ATS? Wouldnt it be a dream come true to round up and profile potential "trouble makers" and free thinkers, even giving them a list of all your favourite conspiracies.

This must especially strike a cord with the members here who lean toward the NWO side of things.

Or am i just being paranoid?

Personally I'am one of those who believe if you're not doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about. On the other hand if you've been spouting hate and contempt for the inhabitants of the country you currently reside, I think you do have something to worry about.

I do not want to give up my freedom for safety, but I also don't want those who want me dead living freely amongst us.

This is true, but then the worry is, who gets to decide whats wrong. One day simply oposing government policy could be a crime. Its all fine and dandy now, but if suddenly a huge regime change takes place in the government and you want to try and opose that, well, you basically dont have a chance. In fact they would have been able to pick you out from the information and dealt with you before you became a problem to them lol

But i do understand your point of view too. And thanks for the reply, i havent been getting many lately.

I personally lean towards "look out the big scary boogy mans coming, give us your freedoms so we can protect you!" side of the argument.

I have to agree with all the points you make.

My mindset at the moment is along the lines of. What would the British have done during the second world war if Lord Haw Haw had been broadcasting from Basingstoke. Would they have let him carry on because they didn't want to deprive him of his freeedom of speech?

There is always a fine line between non conformity and political agitation.
The problem is as you say, who will decide?

Its seems i could be the only one here who's a little worried about all of this.
