Voting device pact at issue, Firm sues over snub by state

Diebold Election Systems Inc. , one of the country's largest manufacturers of voting machines, is scheduled to argue in court today that the Office of the Secretary of State wrongly picked another company to supply thousands of voting machines for the disabled.

Diebold says it will ask a judge to overturn the selection of AutoMARK , a Diebold business competitor, because the office of Secretary of State William F. Galvin failed to choose the best machine.

The contract is valued at about Weisberg said Diehold was so stunned it did not get the contract that it now believes "it's worth the time and money" of going to court to challenge the contract's award, even though the company at this stage has no hard evidence of unfair treatment.

This seems pretty frivolous that a company as huge as Diebold would sue an entire state, due to the fact that they did not get a 9 million dollar contract.

I wonder why this means so much to them, is this going to tie in with the conspiracy of the voting machines being rigged?

It just appears to be very fishy that Diebold would cause such a stink over something so miniscule in the scheme of things.

A big monopolistic company decides to sue a state because they are not happy with the states decision?

I think there's something far more sinister to this. Observe (emphasis mine):

Diebold says it will ask a judge to overturn the selection of AutoMARK , a Diebold business competitor, because the office of Secretary of State William F. Galvin failed to choose the best machine.

If their lawsuit is successful, it will change the landscape by which government controlled entities buy products, and will cost local, state and federal governmental agencies massive amounts of cash in legal fees because, if a company thinks their product is better than another company's (say the FBI buys a bunch of Ford Crown Victorias but Toyota says the Camry XLE is better, or a local mayor's office buys a bunch of Bic pens but Pilot says their pens are better), they can legitimately sue that governmental agency.

Who knows, this may even go deeper, and be to the point where anyone can be sued for buying a product.
