Hundreds of residents in Russian have refused to switch to new passports because they believe the documents' bar codes contain satanic symbols which include 666.

I suppose this is interesting because of a worldwide theory that the anti-christ has some affiliation with barcodes. i don't necessarily think this is the case, but some of you might find it interesting.

ignorance always tends to get in the way of progress. barcodes are technology, that's all they are.

well, ANYTHING can be used for evil. medicine can be turned to poison, but should we do away with penicilin?

7Ayreon never said we should get rid of technology. We should just be careful that technology doesn't end up permeating every aspect of our lives. Or if it does, the technology should be safe and productive.

well, um, barcodes are safe and productive. i don't see anything dangerous about saving hundreds of hours of labor

barcodes are a great advance in technology. i doubt they are evil, but they may be the next step to implanted computer chips in to the back of our neck. the mark of the beast could be very close happening. I think atm cards are the first step, then combining them with id cards or drivers licences will be the next step, and then newborns will be implanted with id chips at birth with the great idea of keeping track of them in case of abduction, but then it will evolve into implanted atm cards and id's.
the government will slowly introduce these steps into effect, to track criminals, and make sure no laws are broken. i mean if we have laws the citizens are to obey, what is stopping the government from going all out and keeping them inforced.

A few weeks ago, I saw a program on the Science Channel pertaining to "human identification chips". They said that they weren't practical and could never work. This is because introducing permanent, foreign objects into the body would result in infections, tumors, and other bad stuffs. But they could be wrong, three decades ago they never dreamed that computer chips could one day be the size of grains of sand.

well, we may be wrong 3 decades ago, but i think it was 2 decades ago that someone said that we'd double the number of transistors on a computer chip every year (he was right).

permanent implants tend to not work out.

now, as for the whole "it's a slippery slope" argument, it's not like they're tatooing barcodes on the people

Well it's like bar-coding products we are going to use so perhaps that is a way these villagers are seeing it as. They don't want to use products that has a bar-code. Cause it's pretty much the same thing if you we're tatooed one on your skin. Just slightly under a different scenario.
