In need of computer help pronto. Hoping I won't need to reboot the whole thing. I'm mildly retarded when it comes to computers. Help would be greatly appreciated. I was trying to tweak Emule and I screwed up my IP address/LAN thing(As I said, I'm an idiot when it comes to computers). I can't get on the Net my usual way now. I'm on a different wireless network that has a very weak signal. These are the exact directions I followed from a friend of mine on another site who was trying to help me with Emule.

Port Forwarding: These are settings you need to change in your NAT router. If you don't have a NAT router then you don't need to worry about this. One way to quickly find out if you have a NAT router is to go to Start->Run and type

cmd

if you are on Windows 2000/XP/Vista or

winipcfg

if you have Windows 95/98(in which case I recommend upgrading). A command prompt will appear. From there type

ipconfig

It will show you your LAN IP address. If it starts with 192.168. then you definitely have a NAT router. Write this IP address down because you need it to enable port forwarding. To begin configuring your NAT router, goto 192.168.0.1... or in some cases 192.168.1.1... This is not an Internet site but your router's config screen. One form of port forwarding is called "enable DMZ" which means forward all connections attempts. You just have to enter the LAN IP of the computer you want to receive the connections. If you only want to forward connections to specific ports on specific protocols, use port forwarding. You should be able to configure either one of these options from your router's config screen.

This was where I messed up. I can no longer connect via linksys. My connection goes from green bars with great connection that will last for 2 days or so to red bars with horrible connection. For what it's worth, I'm on a laptop. If you need any more info just ask.

the answer to this one is to phone linksys direct. I have done this a few times and they will go through your connection setup with you. they are very helpfull and it will save you a load of grief.
If you don't have a number that is at the back of the manual, post back here and let me know what country you are in. I'll then give you a number to call
Cheers
John

You will find a quick solution at portforward.com, can you believe your not the first one! jk

then click on portforwarding --> select your router model --> select emule walkthrough --> and viola, step by step guide with pretty pictures.

----Things that you don't really need to know but are good to know----

NAT stands for Network Address Translation which is changing the source or destination address of the information coming through your router basically so it can be sent somewhere else(s) (has a whole lot of other uses). For P2P sharing like "emule" it acts like a broadcast for sharing.

Portforwarding needs to use NAT to work.

Portforwarding: You know that a computer directly connected to the Internet has 2 IP addresses? (Like yours) 1 for outside Internet identification (WAN) and one for inside identification (LAN) (this is the one you set in your PC configuration).

Information comes & goes through your computer through ports (Like a ship) 65536 ports (they are local to your computer). Portforwarding sends information from a chosen port across the internet to someones elses machine even a private one. So for P2P it makes everyone able to download fom each other.

Remember this for Manual LAN setup:

ip: your local internet protocol (your chosen number)i.e. xxx.xxx.xxx.xx
subnet: The subnet network number (automatic).
Gateway: Your gateway to the world a.k.a router. The routers IP address.

DNS: (domain name server IP's) You can leave it blank or in the command console type ipconfig /all and it may show.
