Billion Dollar US Sub Disappears Overnight for Several Hours

abcnews.go.com

March 14, 2007 — The Navy mobilized a search-and-rescue operation Tuesday night after it believed one of its submarines, the USS San Juan, had gone missing off the coast of Florida with 140 crew members aboard.

Communications were re-established early this morning, and it all appears to have been a case of miscommunication.

The concern was so high that Defense Secretary Robert Gates was notified of the situation overnight, as was White House national security adviser Stephen Hadley, who was preparing to brief President Bush with the news when communications were re-established with the missing submarine.

The Navy had also begun notifying the families of the 140 crew members that the submarine was missing. The incident is under investigation with the focus being on why the ship missed a pre-established communications period with surface ships.

Sub goes missing for 10 hours off the coast of Florida and the captain and crew miss a scheduled check in yet are "unaware" of anything being wrong, nor were they aware that they were being sought.

This on March 13th, in the Bermuda Triangle?

The nuclear class sub was missing for ten hours! They were sure it was permanently gone. The reason the families were called in was to get their stories matching the official one. If not, then skrinnxx! *draw first index finger across throat* for the kiddies!

And the crew, not just the captain, had no idea anyone was trying to get ahold of them. They noticed NOTHING out of the ordinary! Now stop and think about this. That is a lot of friggin power, to be able to stop a nuke sub nilly willy for whatever reason without any fear of consequences. If Russia or China did that we would be at DEFCON 1 right now!

March 13th was auspicious indeed.

Wow!!! Can't believe that a Billion dollar sub would be commanded by an individual that was unaware of scheduled contact time.. Sound's a bit out of the ordinary to me. I am glad to hear they are alright though. Guess the question that runs through my mind is , "Isn't it odd it was off the coast of Fl. and did this scenario take place as the Gov. stated it did?" Though they didn't state the exact location, it had to be some where in the vicinity of the 'Bermuda Triangle' which is a very interesting area indeed.

I also feel for the families of the crew that were called for notification of it's disappearance, they must of been worried sick over their duration of not knowing. Also, "Do you think that the debriefing they will attend will be the truth of this whole event?" IMO, Doesn't seem to be the case with our Gov. operatives and representatives.

They were probably on shore leave in the Keys.

Seriously, I'm glad everything turned out OK.

So where was this Sub when it went missing, Florida? Forgive me I know nothing of how the US Navy works, Wouldn't this sub be with the USS Enterprise off Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea.

From Commander, Submarine Force U.S. Atlantic Fleet Public Affairs

NORFOLK (NNS) -- During the early evening of March 13, units of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group (CSG) received a series of indications that USS San Juan (SSN 751), a Los Angeles class submarine conducting pre-deployment training with the Enterprise CSG, was in distress.

Fortunately, the submarine established communications in the early morning hours of March 14, and indicated that there were no problems; hence, units were able to stand down from the search and rescue that was already well underway.

Long enough to slip into shore and and out again, just a thought.

While this makes for a nice, dramatic scenario, it has nothing to do with reality, as anyone who actually knows something about submarine operations can tell you.

Obviously, if a submarine goes missing, word travels fast, and no, The Government doesn't go around threatening to kill the children of missing sailors.

The fact that this is even in the news at all is proof enough of that.
