Google To Help Mumbai Police Nail Web "Offenders"

cities.expressindia.com

Mumbai, March 10: Anti-Shivaji forums or anti-Ambedkar postings or “hate India” campaigns on Google’s social networking site, Orkut, have been confounding our authorities for quite sometime now. Other than blocking the objectionable forums, the Mumbai Police could do little—except wait for the next one to pop up on the web, say, a “fan club” of wanted underworld dons like Dawood Ibrahim or Chhota Shakeel.

Orkut is Google's home-grown social networking service (originally hatched by a group of employees working on it on their free days) made a deal with India's Enforcement Directorate and Mumbai Police to provide the IP addresses of posters of content considered to be "objectionable" by the Bombay police. Objectionable content would be, postings against Indian personalities, young women who admire Indian mobsters (wtf?), and anti-Indian "words".

After Google's lament over such actions in China, it's very surprising to see this happening.

As a side note I can add that I suspect Google (and Cisco) giving authorities a hand here in Thailand too.

Reliable news reports tell that 10000+ sites been closed since the coup, and the total number of blocked sites is as high as 35000, 60% being porn sites, leaving about 15000 'serious' sites closed down.

I experienced it myself some day in November my favourite Danish news (in Danish) was just gone.

Don't know how they got their foot in the mouth, but they have always been known to speak their mind.

Don't do that in this country. I'm very careful what I say about TH here on ATS, as I sure wouldn't like if they blocked access to it.
