From your source:

TextCarnivore has been used by the FBI for some time.

Since when?

Basically, Carnivore is a Windows computer specifically designed to sit on networks of Internet service providers and monitor and record electronic transmissions.

Basically? How about specifications on hard drive capacity? That must be one BIG operation...imagine how many people must be employed by such a operation!

FBI agents may then remove the hard drive and access all information Carnivore was programmed to record (McCullagh)

And I thought my "to do list" was booked. That must take forever to create a fully comprehensible profile of someone just based on computer habits....wow.

2). The FBI has used Carnivore to intercept Internet communications of suspected criminals. Crimes such as terrorism, child pornography, credit card fraud, and insider stock trading have all been uncovered through the use of Carnivore (Ferullo 1).

The horror! Shame on them!

Carnivore is undoubtedly an effective tool in fighting crime. However, the benefits which are created, potentially require a sacrifice of individual privacy rights as well.

Yeah...I love dystopian fiction too. Makes me feel ALIVE.

Good read. I hope more people can enjoy this article as much as I did. Great find! Interesting insights.

But seriously - just because it can do all this there isn't a defnitive reason why this technology would be put to use infringing on our personal privacies....and if it were to be used for such, how exactly would it be detrimental to us?

It's only information, right?

Are not the enemy, (But they might try and make US the enemy!). They must be in fear that terrorists are here on U.S. soil and are planning attacks.
This is why they have these systems, to find terrorists, which in my view this seems not to be too true, they are interested in people who know 911 was a inside job so they can be labled as terrorist, when infact they are the terrorists.
Terrorists who are making the American public the bad guys of the world, look at the riots down in Brazil, they hate the U.S. they hate the president, so what these terrorists have done is: they are making US the targets, we are now fighting terrorist within our government along with all the enemies they have created for us, so it's US Americans against the world at home and abroad.
We are being turned into the "BAIT" for attacks, and anyone saying they are are a "PATRIOT" are their enemies. So it US against them.

The Patriot Act does not give Bush dictatorship, that is a ridiculous comment and it isn't illegal. If you are afraid of "Big Brother," fear Google, as they have more information now on every single American then the government could ever hope to have. And contrary to Google's "Dont be Evil" policy, they are following a policy that has traditionally created dictatorships, because they favor government regulation of the Internet, a major source of information.

You guys don't know what creates a dictatorship. Dictatorships and police states are formed when the people have their economic freedom and weapons removed. The Republican Party is not trying to do this.

If Bush was in office for the next 25 years, with his current policies, he would fail if he was literally trying to form a police state or dictatorship; the Assault Weapons ban expired under him and the Republicans didn't renew it, and he has only freed up the economy. It is Bush who says that more government regulation of industry for global warming is a bad idea, and won't work (which it won't).

So don't fear Bush as a dictator. People saying that, basically, don't know what they're talking about.

PHARAOH, 9/11 wasn't an inside job, the Pentagon can't keep simple secrets, let alone something like 9/11, you know how big the news would've been for the person who came forth and alerted the media to a plot such as 9/11 (which you can be sure would've happened because someone would've gotten cold feet).

Bush also doesn't conduct any wiretapping, either, for those of you wondering about that. It is the interception of international signals, not wiretapping. The term "wiretapping" was started by the New York Times in an attempt to panic the populace, making them think their rights are being infringed upon.
