NATO airstrike hits Afghan house, kills 9 civilians

JABAR, Afghanistan — A U.S.-led coalition airstrike destroyed a mud-brick home, killing nine people from four generations of an Afghan family during a clash between Western troops and militants, Afghan officials and relatives said Monday.

The U.S. military said two men with automatic rifles were seen heading into a compound of five homes after a rocket attack on a U.S. base in the area.

People of Afganistan are not happy about that.

If "incidents" like this continue, more and more people shall start trusting the Taliban and start to fight the Coalition troops operating in Afganistan. Even the president himself has been critical of the international forces. But it looks like that the soldiers there kind of do not care for local population - or at least it looks this way...

More civilians die in Afghanistan

He said the nine dead civilians included five women and three children and that the raid was carried out by Nato forces. Nato have denied any involvement.

But later a US military statement said US-led forces had "dropped two 2,000-pound (900-kilogram) bombs" during an air strike in Kapisa after a Nato base had come under attack.

A US spokesman, Lt Col David Accetta, said the Nato base had come under rocket attack and that "two men with AK-47s" were seen leaving the scene of the rocket attack and entering a compound," the Associated Press news agency reports.

As usual, when something bad happens, just bomb the house and bomb the crap out of any evidence; that way you can make up whatever story you want to, in order to further defend your position. But this comes only one day, after US solders fired indiscriminately along at least a six-mile stretch of one of eastern Afghanistan's busiest highways — a route often filled not only with cars and trucks but Afghans on foot and bicycles.

Winning Hearts and Mindes, ey?

It's a rough situation and we'll never fully understand it unless we go there. I try to imagine the reverse, you know, foreign troops from a very different culture occupying my town, and I simply can't see the result as being good. Battle hardend soldiers and civilians don't really mix, especially when the soldiers' culture is largely antagonistic towards the civilians'.
