It's unclear exactly what they are launching because this is a secret military project, but i believe they are actually testing an ICBM, once they master the gyroscope guidance technology it won't take long before they got a smaller rocket that can deliver a re-entry vehicle anywhere on the globe.

Wouldnt the US be able to moniotr anything launched into space?
I mean, surely if we can detect ICBMs being launched 'at us'
we'd be able to see Irans 'first crude attempt' at putting something close to orbit.

If It was anything of the such, i reackon missles would of been launched in retaliation, quicker than those reports coming out.

I do believe they tried, or put ( did then even succeed ) something in space... very menial and basic... sort of like the whol AIDS cure..

Iran is trying to show the world they are academic, and are contributing to man kinds current challenges.... are we going to strike a country down when they are contributing to man kinds evolution?

While I dont think it'll work, it will make it harder for people to percieve them as crazy, suicidal persians.

Yes the US can detect space shots, and other missile launches, probably depending on weather and such but again what they can detect is secret..butanyways Iran would have assumed the US would detect the space launch so they went ahead and put something out there to the press to pre-empt any US accusations..but the statements they put out were contadictory, first saying they had launched a satelite-which I saw repeated on the American TV news channel CNN Headline News, then back tracking a bit and saying it was just some type of a weather test, not likly what they were really doing, they probably planned this confusion in advance..they are wary of the Europeans putting unilateral sanctions on them and now is a sensitive time considering the UNSC is considering possible further sanctions. but anyways I think theres a good chance they are getting close to being able to orbit satelites..

The Kosmos series of recon birds are designed to 'read' the seas around the world and the KH 11 type birds can 'read', map and photgraph the earth whilst in geosyncratic [?] orbit.

They are designed to detect launch 'blooms' by radar, thermal and digital imagary.

So I would think that any missile of sufficient payload with even the smallest of launch blooms, would be detected whether they are land or sea launched.

I doubt very much that Iran has sufficient technology available to actually launch an ICBM but I would imagine that they do possess advanced missile technology, given that Russia has been supplying Iran for decades.
