UK faces 'collapse of authority'

look at all the recent headlines baout kids in the uk and now we have some shootings that were murders. is this like what is happening in america where these groups use these tragedies as a excuse for a more total state run country.

uk is already a police state more than america and now we have mp's talking about giving more control to authorities over kids because parents cannot handle them.

Britain is facing a "collapse of authority" where young people no longer respect adults or institutions, a senior Conservative will warn.
Shadow trade and industry secretary Alan Duncan will say it is up to the Tories to "re-civilise" the country.

In a speech in London, Mr Duncan will say the UK is "condemned to decline" if young people cannot be controlled.

would be interested to hear your views on this, as there seems to be alot, in the news recently about kids in us and uk.

There is no doubt that crime is a serious and growing problem in the UK but we are certainly not unique in that respect in the Westerm world.

You need to a little careful about quoting an Conservative party spokesman in opposition discussing law and order though, he is always going to paint as bad a picture as he can and he by no means speaks as a authoratitive voice. Melodramatic soundbites such as

"The greatest problem we need to address in Britain is that it is steadily becoming de-civilised"

and

"the collapse of authority"

have a great deal more to do with trying to prop up a rather bland Conservative party leader's position than they do with the reality of UK life.

Theres a reason young people are "out of control"...and its not the parents.

It's society itself. Children are a mirror image of the state of our society.

Also, given that children are more aware and intelligent than ever, is it a suprise that they decide not to care about life and get out of control when they find out just how bad our own country is, and the state of the world...

It's not a reflection of society it's just the widening impact of those within society who act as they please without paying the consequences. Most people are decent enough and law abiding.

That kind of perception just reinforces this insidious mind set that we've let kids down so we deserve what we get. It's BS. Still it nicely excuses the next thug who ruins someones life.

Accepting your point, I know plenty of children who are "not out of control", who have respect for themselves, their parents, family and society in general.

Headlines are designed to make a point and catch our attention. So a small number of young people are commiting crime, does that mean we tar all children with the same brush. No. It is just a segment of society that has grown up with no respect for authority and that comes from the parents. We, the citizens have allowed this to happen. We have to accept the responsible and it is up to us to engage and empower our authority to manage the country on our behalf.

Are things actually worst that say 20 or 30 years ago. There were still crimes. I can remember the miners strike and many said that was the collapse of authority. Did it happen? No. We are here today.

Of course, there are things we need to do. Have a police force that is supported by and part of the community. Get away from the fear culture and support communities who want to make a difference, and get them the tools and support from Government to face those who care little for the values that many have and want to live by.

We need to ensure that our politicians are fully aware of the kind of country we want to have and not leave it up to what they think. We must accept the responsible. We elect the Government and are all part of the upbringing of children
