Hello, welcome to ATS. I never used to use smileys, but now I do, everyone else using them must have rubbed off on me. How was that lightning storm so weird by the way?

Thanks for the welcome fullas. The storm was strange because i woke up hearing strange noises which sounded like people running past my window so i stuck my head out the window and swore my head off because i thought there were people out there(i think it might have been dogs). But there was nothing out there but a frog(?)making strange noises.Thats when i noticed the lightning flashes every few seconds the sky would flash from a small cloud sitting beside the mountain which is about 10km away.It wasnt raining it was still really warm(we are in the middle of summer)there was no thunder at all no wind it was kind of spooky.I watched this for about two hours and even went for a walk to a local school to get closer and i swear i saw a twinkle in the sky at one point which really freaked me out. After i went home i kept a knife beside my bed like it was going to do any good but i was quite unnerved. The next day i rung the local newspaper to see if anyone had said anything but they knew nothing of it however my boss said she heard someone on the radio sa y something about the lightning.Ive looked on the net but the closest i could find was a summer storm which said in really hot weather you can get lightning without rain or wind but it didnt say anything about it being hours long and silent.

Is the mountain you describe in any way interesting, or where is it, as it could perhaps help. It sounds like some sort of earthlight which I think are more common in more geologically active areas.

Thanks for the link.Im not sure if it was that but ill keep reading. The mountain is dormant but its got a cool classical volcanoe shape.Theres alot of local tales and legends about it.There is an active(im pretty sure its classed as active)mountain about 35-45km away which is also a big player in local folklore. When i can i will u2u the location if you like

The location would be helpful yes, I think you need another 15 posts to send U2U's. It's fair enough if you don't want to give away your location more publicly, although just the name of either or both volcanoes would do.

This is quite interesting, reminds me of this phenomenon from Popocatepetl:
