Dec. 11, 2003 -- An intoxication gene controls whether alcohol makes one drunk, worm studies show.


Alcohol has no effect on worms lacking the gene. But worms with a revved-up version of the gene act drunk even if they haven't touched a drop of alcohol, report Steven L. McIntire, MD, PhD, and colleagues at the University of California, San Francisco.

I heard about this. They got these poor worms so drunk they couldn't have legally drove home!

Poor little things made "sloppy s's" when they tried to crawl.

Well they already have a pill that makes you sick as a dog if you drink. Also one that makes coc aine have no impact of high. And one that strips all opiates from your system and unable to 'get' high again for about a week.

This pill would presumably be similar, it would give you all the next days hangover all at once. Any 'stripper' drug that works is EXTREMELY dangerous to your system, from a shock or heartattack standpoint.

I doubt this would ever be OTC for 'driving home'. More like administered in detox under a doctors care.

Well, according to the study, it would work much different. According to the study, some of the worms had defective drunk genes...Now, I can't remember if the defect made you get drunk, or the defect was the worms that DIDN'T get drunk...probably the latter. ANYWAY, the point is that if they can now repeat this finding in humans, and find that some of us have a gene that will not recognize the effect of alcohol, they can then in some way develop a manner to turn off the "drunk gene". Apparently, the theory is that alcoholics drink to get drunk and if they can't they won't I guess...which really does kind of make sense.

The implication is a drug might be found that could change the effect of alcohol on the BK channel. That might quickly sober someone up after a bout of drinking. It might also help alcoholics lose their taste for drinking:w:

As strange as this study sounds....and I really would love to see a drunk worm (LMAO).....this could save so many lives and families.....I think it's a great thing!

I see what both of you are saying. But to both point out there IS a pill that makes alcoholics lose their taste for drinking. In fact, hairspray makes you puke. Any scent or proximity to any form of alcohol. I mean IT WORKS.

And the 'gene' approach, is very similar to the one being done in Cocaine addicts. Last I heard, there was a shot that would make coc aine never work again, but it was blocked from approval based on phychologists recommendations. The problem being, it does nothing for the addiction, just makes getting high impossible.

Perhaps, the alchohol approach wouldn't be like the thrid I mentioned, the opiate stripper...but I don't get what it 'fixes'. It doesn't make alcholics able to drink? Would it? I don't know. If it does just sober you up immediately after drinking...I have a marketing name for it!

Well, think about the addiction has two part: 1. physical addiction to the substance, and then 2. psychological addiction to the effect.

If you had a pill that could block the effect, then all your left with is physical detoxification...that's no big thing. So you dry/clean them out...and the pill takes away the psychological reason for going back.

I think it could work. That or they'd drink themselves to death trying to get drunk...lol.

That's what a shrink told me is the main fear on the coke drug. People now stop drinking or doing coke when their body says...Whooooooooo, you're about to die. With an effect blocker, you don't know you're poisoning yourself.

I mean you're right for alcoholics...it makes sense. Why drink? But do they ever make sense???

Plus I could SOOOO see kids abusing a pill like that. They already BONG fifths of liquor to look tough at parties (then die). Imagine NEVER getting drunk. It's a macho pill for drinking games. People that weren't alcoholic (physically) would become alcoholic in just a few drinking sessions (but never get drunk!)

It would need controls, regulation. I think viagra is a mistake too. I mean as a 'party' drug.
