In 90's Russia 100,000 children were given to state care per year. As detailed in a 1998 report titled; "Abandoned to the State, Cruelty and Neglect in Russian Orphanages". Human Rights Watch documented brutal treatment of these children many of whom are exposed to appalling levels of cruelty and neglect ie. beaten, locked in unheated rooms during the winter months and treated as subhuman by staff and denied stimulation, training, and education. The list goes on! This kind of treatment was shown on western media fairly often im the late 90's early 00's, there was an outcry, the Russian state promised things would change. We are now in 2007 and children are still being treated like caged animals.

"Russian prosecutors are investigating allegations that hospital staff in Yekaterinburg gagged babies because they did not want to hear them crying."

"Russians are used to scandals in the hospital, but this case has touched a raw nerve, says the BBC's Richard Galpin in Moscow."

"Children in the first year of life were systematically gagged with sticking plaster to make children behave quietly," the prosecutors' press service said."

How is this kind of behaviour still happening? Russia is supposed to be working hard to improve its citizens lives! If Russia's Premier Vladimir Putin it to be believed. He is Quoted as saying:

"Nobody and nothing will stop Russia on the road to strengthening democracy and ensuring human rights and freedoms."

and

"Our aims are absolutely clear: They are a high living standard in the country and a secure, free and comfortable life. "

This kind of treatment to human beings needs to stop especially as Russia is a modern and developed nation. I think the UN needs to use it's political influence to kick Russia in the right direction. Maybe sending in human rights inspectors to Russia's childrens homes and hospitals.

Oh man, I watched this last night on a documentary in Germany!

They showed how these kids had dummies/pacifyers tape into the babys mouth the whole day!!!!

The nurse on ward said "Yeah so what, we dont want to hear them screaming all day it makes us mad"

The nurses in this hospital should get locked up!!!

I have heard about this before and am as appalled now as I was then to hear of these conditions these children have to live.
I was also surprised to hear of it still happening.

I am so so disgusted and saddened about this. How can we treat our own like this? They are babies. What is wrong with these people?

I am sitting here at work reading this and am just gut wrenched about it.
I am also surprised that there are only 2 posts on this subject.

Why not send these children to countries that can care for them. To people who would love to have a child or children of their own but cannot due to expenses and travel and all the red tape that comes with adoption in foreign countries.
