PETA Workers Illegally Euthanize Dozens of Animas, page 1

Apparently a trial has started against 2 PETA employees (not volunteers, but paid employees) for their part in picking up animals from vets and the coutny shelter in Ahoskie, NC and then promptly euthanizing them and improperly disposing of them in a dumpster.

Over a period of three weeks in the summer of 2005, police officers in the small town of Ahoskie, N.C., pulled the bodies of 80 animals from the trash bin. Some were puppies, some were full-grown. Most were mutts.

On the fourth week, officers set up a stakeout, and when a white van pulled up to the dumpster, they pounced.

If the van's cargo — 10 dead dogs and three dead cats in black bags — was to be expected, its occupants were not. The driver and the passenger were employees of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and the vehicle was registered to the organization.

The workers, Adria Hinkle, 28, and Andrew Cook, 25, were arrested and later indicted on 24 felony charges, including 21 counts of animal cruelty, for injecting lethal doses of an anesthetic into strays they had just collected from county shelters and a veterinarian's office.

The Virginian-Pilot reported that the group euthanized more than 6,000 animals between 2001 and 2003, about 83 percent of those it collected.

Statistics compiled by the national Humane Society indicate that only about half of the strays will be adopted. The rest will be put to death. PETA insists that in the case of the "unadoptable" — the old, sick, antisocial or not housebroken — it is more compassionate to euthanize them immediately than to let them live in shelters, where they may be mistreated.

Interesting that PETA the ultra animal rights cause has no problems with euthanizing thousand of animals. Apparently they feel these animals won't be adopted and it is more humane for them to be put down.

I'm not sure what PETA wants done with these animals. But the more I read on this subject the more I'm assued that the people who run PETA are nut jobs. I've always known this but this is just another confiirmation.

In another article I located it mentioned that some of these animals were taken from a no-kill shelter. THe charges that are in the works against the employees are based on the fact that PETA has no permission to administer the controlled substances used in euthanasia.

As someone who volunteers for a wild animal rescue and rehabilitation I understand the need to euthanize some animals. The issue here is that PETA is such a wing-nut animals right organization ... they've come out saying that killing animals in slaughterhouses is akin to the holocaust. But apparently when they kill animals it's okay.

Hopefully this will help curtail some of the donations pouring into that wasteful organization. If you want to help animals take the time to research what organizations you are giving your money to. There are many out there that have good missions and objectives ... of course they aren't as sensational as PETA and may be a little more difficult to locate.

The trial is currently underway in NC and it will be interesting to see how this plays out. The second link below has an ongoing, updated coverage of the trial against the two employees. One warning it is written by an anti-PETA group that is there monitoring the trial so there is a slant to it.

What a shocking article! I never would've imagined PETA in this kind of a scandal. This definetly changes my opinions of them a bit. I even receive the PETA newsletter, I actually supported them! I too understand the need to euthanize some animals, but these animals didn't even have a chance. Are they saying they couldn't give away a Dalmation? I went down just over the summer and gave away kittens at the local store. If they had actually tried I think they could've found a few homes for them.

After watching the Hale and Pace doccumentary about PETA, it finally convinced me what a whack nutjob organisation they are. This news story just reasserts my beliefs. I believe lots of people who think they are doing something good for the animal kingdom by joining PETA are very misinformed. My advice : if you truly do love animals (hey even the human race) like I do there is no reason whatsoever to support PETA in any way, shape or form.

Instead of donating to such places, I use the money to buy food for strays and take them to vets. I've saved several severely emaciated cats whom the vets felt were lost cause and wanted to put down.

Correction - it was Penn and Teller's: Bull**** on PETA, not Hale and Pace (LoL). Btw I can't find the edit button on my previous post does edit stop working after some time? Usin firefox...

Just to update the story, the workers were cleared of all charges of animal cruelty. They were instead charged with littering of the animal carcasses. They recieved 10 day suspened jail sentence, one year of supervised probation, 50 hours of community service, and $4000 in fines.

Penn & Teller have covered this BS group. These guys are totaly full of it and they get away with this crap.

I want to start the People for the ethical Treatment of Vegitables. An anti PETA leauge. I have writen PETA before about the dumb ideas they present and the wrong tactics they use to get their point across.
