A medicine man gets out of the military on conscientious objector status because of new found beliefs he had while in boot camp.

Ronnie Tallman says that when he joined the Marines, he never expected a spiritual transformation that would put his newfound Navajo tribal beliefs in conflict with his military duties.
A military screening board interviewed psychiatrists and a chaplain, among others, before determining Jan. 11 that Tallman's newfound status as a type of Navajo medicine man was "simply a means to avoid combat deployment to Iraq."
On Wednesday, however, the military changed course, granting Tallman conscientious objector status.
"I didn't expect this. I'm really happy right now," Tallman said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press from the California base.

I find it almost miraculous in this case for this young gentleman. Here he signs up for the military makes it almost all the way thru boot camp and then has some sort of spiritual awakening that has him not able to kill or harm a living thing. and the military processes him as a conseintious objector to let him out?

Are you saying that his spiritual awakening would be impossible? If his intentions were always to avoid going to war, then he wouldn't have signed up. Seems most likely that he did come to self realization during his training and wanted to live by his faith. The "Conscientious Objector Status" does exist for situations such as this, so why shouldn't he be allowed to follow his faith? Requiring him to stay is pretty much forcing him to kill against his own will, which might cause resentment and even cause him to abandon his duties in the future. The military would benefit more from him not including himself in thir duties, rather than forcing him to fight.

Meh. Might as well let him out. Why force anyone to go anyway? Just boot them out of the military, its not really worth the effort, or the drama, or the political rhetoric.

Todays military is an all volunteer force. So if he decides to leave then so be it.
