Iran is set to try to try launch a sateltie into space. Experts feel that they have modified the Shahab 3 missile for the mission. Experts are also expressing concerns that if sucsessfull the launcher could be modified into an ICBM with about 2500 mile range, putting targets in central Europe as well as Russia, China, and India.

Iran has converted its most powerful ballistic missile into a satellite launch vehicle. The 30-ton rocket could also be a wolf in sheep's clothing for testing longer-range missile strike technologies, Aviation Week & Space Technology magazine reports in its Jan. 29 issue.

The Iranian space launcher has recently been assembled and "will liftoff soon" with an Iranian satellite, according to Alaoddin Boroujerdi, the chairman of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission.

The move toward an independent space launch capacity is likely to ratchet up concern in the U.S. and Europe about Iran's strategic capabilities and intents. Orbiting its own satellite would send a powerful message throughout the Muslim world about the Shiite regime in Tehran.

I'd have a hard time seeing the Iranians use those to strike Russia

I can't even imagine the kind of counterstrike the Russians would put up

China and India have some nuclear weapons stockpile but nothing near what Russia has

Remember that End Of the World Flash? With Stalin screaming Motherland!!!
Hehe... that was a good watch

Anyway

As for Central Europe.... duh why would they strike there?

the Most Logical target for Iran with a Weapon like that would be Israel and Coalition forces in the Middle East

Forgot to add: I'd also have a hard time seeing Iran bomb Israel... Given their response capacity
And with the Iraqiis and US force in the Middle

Much like the very "enviable" position of Germany during the Cold War

Well good for them.

The world cheered and admired nations who entered space back in the day, so for a country to get their in the end is still a fete.

But I am keen to ask....
People think Iran has nothing in terms of sophisticated means of defense.
yet they are preparing to put a satellite into orbit?

heh,

Never under-estimate your enemy.

I don't, I'd just point out that the Soviet Union and USA went in space a long time ago...

Therefore shouldnt we never underestimate the US?

I mean, they surely continued their scientific research during that time

I dont think anyone is under estimating them but you have toi remember space flight is a whole different ball game. It is very complex with alot of things that can go wrong.

china has had the ability to send things into orbit far longer than iran has, if they really do, yet it took until 2004 for them to send a man into orbit. Imagine what it took to do what the US did back in the 60s and 70s. Multiple trips to a different planetary body is a feat the US did over thirty years ago and no one else has managed to do that.

I just think Iran is rushing things way too fast for their current rate of development.

I think this has NOTHING to do with space.

It has huge propaganda value especially within the Arab World.

It allows the furter development or an for real ICBM in a manner that is easily defended compared to an outright missile test.

Jeez, if Iran so much as opened up a McDonalds, people would be screaming it was a trap to lure the western infidels to their death

I think it very likely that any launch that Iran makes will be sabotaged . For if they did send a rocket into space it would only speed up the inevitable attack that faces them.

You do realise that a nuclear strike on the coalition forces in the Middle East would effectively be the same as a direct strike on the USA, Britain, or Europe ?

You do realize there is many denominations of Islam?

And interpretations for that matter.

I for one am pleased for them. I know the game Iran is playing, and it's a good one.

whats that got to do with it?

maybe the iranians will "pray" the rocket into space?

judgeing by their previous efforts they will have to wait for eternity to get the 79 virgins they so crave?

moslems are doomed to failure in space...

i mean apart from destruction of the west they have no goals...

they are quite barbaric in their thoughts.

lET US HOLD HANDS...LIGHT THE CANDLES AND PRAY THE ROCKET EXPLODES ON THE LAUNCHPAD...
